cheers!

No update as such I've been away for nearly a week.

The sunroof is stuck open, not right open but as if you'd started to roll it backwards (rather than tilt upwards) and the back has sank down and i can't move it any direction.

someone's told me it needs greasing, another has said its come out of sync with the cogs.

dunno what to do, don't fancy forcing it.

Hmm think i'd take the headlining :)

although really don't fancy doing that either, i could need the car at any time really.

I'll see

Managed to get it to do the vent part properly, although drives side seems very loose and doesn't go right up and also seems to catch the roof.

You don't need to take the headlining off... only the headlining panel inside the sunroof. From what I can remember it's just clipped in so some strategic tugs will get it removed to expose the mechanism

It needs to be done whilst the roof is at vent to not damage things though! I did Jet's when I had her, fingers crossed the white plastic block hasn't snapped.

We all know they will have done :( :( So therefore, fingers crossed the white plastic blocks have only cracked enough so you can glue them back together

The sun roofs are a bit of a nightmare, I avoid them like the plague. Sometimes they can be fixed, but the main problem is when they seize up people try to force them with the handle crank and wreck/bend everything.

Try to push the roof back at the same time as cranking the handle, enough the see the front of the sun roof headlining panel, then pull it off from the front.

If you are lucky you will be able to 'adjust' it back into position after looking at the mechanism. If you do get it 'working' close it, take off the handle and leave it alone. If you are unlucky you will need some new bits to hold it up properly.

Thank god you've never worked on my car's engine. How the hell is that a useful solution?!

I'm sorry but that just smacks of the same sort of "fix" as holding up a car windows with a block of wood when the mech breaks, it's just downright lazy. Parts availability on our cars is difficult for everything but I thought the whole reason we are banging our heads together was to try and find proper solutions to this?

The Volvo cables do come up s/h very occasionally, but it wouldn't surprise me if you took the old cables to a VW specialist (or in fact several other manufactures but the research a few of us have done so far has led us to VW's being very similar) you'll get something similar. The sunroofs are OEM Golde, FWIW the mk2 golf cables won't work, but with a bit of time and effort a solution will be found.

Hmmm.............lazy it may be,but,it works a treat on my Cherokee.

Mind ya I use the fully adjustable wood block so I consider it to be the zenith of lazy repairs.

How can any fix involving wood be considered lazy?

wood in its natural state, is a tree.

Thats hard work to even get to Wood!

Cheers for all the replies!

In hind sight i wish i hadn't got a sunroof. Every one in each of my dads past and present Volvos (mostly electric 740 ones) have leaked, got stuck or got sealed. His current 740 has real moss growing around the seal and that works great to stop the water.

now I can see why people would seal it - but i want to do it properly

Fix it enough and leave it - yeah but as a temporary measue

A real fix so it works perfectly is what i'm after. I don't really know why it went it had worked fine for 3 weeks.

I'll get the headlining off the sun roof and see what damage has been done. It only seems to be one side thats broke so i should be able to compare both sides

if the car was a rot box i'd happily go riveting sheets of metal over but its too good. Iwas inking of getting a rectangular peice of vinyl to stick over to make a water tight seal but it seems to be holding the water out enough at the moment

UPDATE on the car:

Orig Radio back in - like it better and hate CDs - i have a tape to jack plug for MP3 player type thing coming from hong kong so i can use my iPod again.

Used fly-eye tinting film on my indicators - someone gave me a bit for free and had already done one when i wasn't looking :D

I only apply that methodology to 300 sunroofs, and most other sunroof to be honest. They do not last well, I have gotten ones working well but only for a few years then something else goes. Leaving them alone once sorted is my best advice, there are simply not enough good parts to go around IMO.

To be honest I've never taken a handle off to avoid using it, it more represents my feeling about it. Of course others are welcome to source parts and nurse it.

Just my opinion.

Re: Nimminz' '88 360 GLT - Update - leo's refurb 19/07

Postby Nimminz » 04 Aug 2010 05:11 pm

I had a little look at the sunroof on monday, found a couple of things wrong:
1. The cranking handle has become worn inside and is slipping a bit
2. The sunroof slips on the wires as it is cranked and subsequently the aunroof doesn't move
3. There is a dark coloured piece of plastic or metal that goes onto the bar that pushes the roof up (the bar that goes through the white plastic blocks) one of these has always been missing on mine which made the sunroof drop. Now both have gone and the sunroof doesn't lift properly.

So i think if i could find another couple of these parts it would help and possibly a new handle.

Also managed toget some nice deep scratches on the top of the sunroof while investigating
