Eh voila!

Turns silently. Just needs the paint touching up and she's ready to go. Will do a full write up later. I am absolutely knackered from all the turning. sm23

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

Can't believe what I have done!  I measured everything up, started winding in the first bearing from the rear before I realised they would not pass the access holes. Pinched the rubber and had to back it out again. I spent the last few hours winding the first and second bearings in from...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

And I have three new bearings ready to go. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/szjon/100_4462_zpsf56b63d1.jpg Noticed a difference in the tubes, I'm guessing this was an economic supersesssion? The one on the right is later. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/szjon/100_4463_zpsa39a5af9.jpg ...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

@volvodspec. How is yours now it is on the car? Any noise? I just set about taking the bearings out of the tube that was generously donated by Mchudd. Contrary to my first post they came out easy in 15 minutes. That bloody tool the DAF lads left in there was what was making it so bloody difficult th...

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!

Thanks for the support guys, it goes a long way on the dark days! Torque tube is coming along, first bearing replaced and ready to go back in the tube. Have left hand threaded bar on the way to make my torque rod adjustable, stupidly brayed in the threaded inserts with a hammer till flush, they are ...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

OK, managed to get to the bearing shop after work, I had phoned beforehand and he sent an email to INA to try to chase up the part number on the housing. Got the response. No record of the number. Left with 3 new shiny FAG bearings. I have rebuilt one, I pressed the housing together with the bearing...

Re: Mk1 anti-tramp bar - longer?

Gone with some threaded inserts after Dai gave me some advice. I got 2 on ebay for a few quid. 12mm diameter fits perfectly with a good few blows from a hammer. Very tight press fit. Stupidly I got left handed threads so I am now getting some left threaded M8 bar and nuts to complete the job. Just n...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

Cheers Ride on. Will do. Update on my sugru experiment. Well impressed with this stuff. It came out slightly off center but it has cured just like rubber and I was able to press it over the shaft without it tearing or deforming. It looks like I will be getting some more in black and going ahead with...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

Plenty suppliers of ptfe lined steel inserts in China. I was thinking this would not be good as the internal surface should grip the shaft allowing it to spin the bearing? Also takes away a bit of vibration damping. I am experimenting at the moment with a bit of sugru I had lying around. I'm thinkin...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

Sounds good Mac. I thought it was some kind of balancer having seen similar in the porsche torque tubes while researching this job but there is not one of these in the torque tube I have as a replacement. I'm thinking it was this lump that was causing the resonation when I was moving my tube around ...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

OK, so the rubber insert is actually rubber bonded internally to a metal sleeve, the first one I did the rubber delaminated. The other two pressed out complete. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/szjon/100_4443_zpsc1582634.jpg There is the slightest of lips on the non flanged side, the one at t...

Re: Torque tube bearing replacement.

Right, have recovered a bit and got the bearing out. Simple enough. The rubber just pulls off, no glue or anything. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/szjon/100_4437_zpse436799b.jpg Drill out the rivet, 3 each side. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd21/szjon/100_4438_zps3471341d.jpg I tapped...
