If youre POR15'ing stuff. Its advisable to use their marine clean and metal prep solutions for the best adherence.... the metal prep is really quite noxious and the paint itself is a right bastard to get off your skin

The 1.7 wont destroy the gearbox anymore than the 1.4 will ... it depends more on how you intend to drive it. If you want the tail out everywhere you go youre likely to break something

Fix the 1.4 or go for an F7, it sounds like you have most of the bits youd need
