Re: ok who got there 340 on top gear
I bought a nearly mint low milage 85 360GLS about 10 years ago for £400 for my partner, registration was FXI 360. She transferred the reg onto an 89 GLE and then bought a BMW, I sold the car to a family member with the intention of transferring the reg to my 360 once I finished the overhaul, but bl0...

Re: Heated seats
They are still thermostatic though, the switches do not necessarily turn them on. The thermostats and heating elements do tend to fail after a bit of bum wear. I have overhauled mine, and fixed the lumbar support at the same time, which needed welding. All fairly straight forward.

Re: Notchy gear box?
Reverse crunch is just a result of the neutral spinning drive shaft, you have to wait a second or 2 after disengaging the clutch for it to stop, otherwise selecting 1st then reverse (with the clutch in) is another solution as it forces the drive shaft to stop. Anything other than this is clutch drag...

Re: 360 diff gaskets required. Where sells them?
Always use the correct dimension and spec of gasket paper for the diff-gear box joint (not sure which one is critical in the 5 speed maybe both), otherwise your gearbox will whine as the gasket forms part of one of the gearbox bearing pre-loads.

Re: bottom ball joint
Myself and a mate drove several 340/360s very very hard for at least 15 years in the 90s+00s (we are now in our 40s). OK we didn't do any power upgrades, but we did shock and wheel/tyre upgrades, cornering is much more fun than high power. I bent several rear axles into a dangerous state due to exce...

Re: Sill Repair
The sill consists of a sandwitch of 3 parts. 1. The chassis, a sort of 90deg edge leading downwards, often floor is rusted at the edge 2. A middle bit with 2-3" holes in it. The bottom bit of it has 3 angles in it including a short bit that heads back under the car and hjust lips over the part 1. 3....

Re: Whining 360 diff / which fluids please?
Don't be too sure its the fluid. I once had a 340 that whined when you slowed down in 2nd gear, mint 4 speed with low milage nearly new, bought it trade. It had had some history in the dealer who had pulled out the gearbox and diff for some other reason then claimed they could not cure the whine whe...

Re: bottom ball joint
They don't generally wear, but can be accident damaged, one from a scrap yard should be fine provided its straight and the rubber intact. I probably have some spare in my parts bin. They do wear...! Why use used stuff if you can get new from Ebay for a few quid? Because they are not as good as the ...

Re: dampers
Inserts are best, the original units are rubbish and don't last. I used to use Monreo Gas, very good VFM guaranteed for life, not sure if they are still available.
To get the main bolt off also helpful is to bolt the strut back into the wheel and stand on the wheel while its face down on the ground.

Re: 340 Propshaft
I used to see this a lot, 'mechanics' believe that torque wrenches are for Engine internals only. 340 props should ONLY be tightened by an accurate torque wrench, otherwise they will usually be overtightened leading to stripping and loss of gripping force. A local mechanic that worked beside a fello...
