Southern BKV 2011

Post by Alanovich » 24 Jan 2011 01:38 pm

So, what is the score with these BKV events?

The Southern "BKV" is on 22nd May this year, but the VOC forum calendar doesn't have much detail about it yet.

Is this some sort of competitive show? If so, how do they work usually? I'd quite like to enter my 360 in a show so any pointers as to how they work/entry fees etc would be appreciated.

Then there's the National one in June (seems a bit close to the regional one to me) - same question applies!

Cheers. sm4

7.52pm: I'm jealous. I really wish that I was a) a Fulham fan; and b) at Craven Cottage. What a night for them. The players are still on the pitch, loving it.

Bump...!

BKV stands for Best Kept Volvo - the competition which is the centrepiece of the club's major events. Yes, it's competitive, and yes there are trophies. The only entry fee is VOC membership, which I think is currently £28/year...for which you get various benefits, including 6 editions of the club's (relatively) glossy magazine. In my role as the VOC's 300 series register keeper, this contains my ramblings about all things 300...plus usually a section on getting my car back from the bodyshop "by the time you get to read this" (a quote which has appeared in the past few editions...at least so I am regularly told!). It's back now, so hopefully the fun-poking will soon cease...?

There is more to the day than that, though. They're usually held at a visitor attraction of some description, plus there are a certain number of trade stalls (including autojumbles) and the like for you to browse. The National is the bigger event, but I've been to the Southern at least once, and that's a good event too. I'd like to get my 343 to all three of the big ones (Northern, Southern, and the National) this year, if I possibly can.

I normally end up judging the 300s at the national, so get your bribes ready ;) Hint: clean the engine bay. There are 20 points available in each of the following 5 categories: Bodywork. Trim (incl: lights, wheels, etc). Underbonnet. Interior. Boot. Not my rules, so don't shoot the messenger if you think it's daft (which I do - too much loading on boot and underbonnet).

Some people find these events rather sedate, but there's nothing too offensive about them to me (and I'm hardly an old fogey)...they're just a good opportunity to enjoy a (hopefully) nice day out looking at some interesting cars.

cheers

The three cars entered were my 343 (which won), Chris' Fake, and Andy's GLEi SE...the latter two of which didn't look like they'd been washed in the past 6 months. Mine only had about 3 months of grime on it sm56 I do remember it was a battle to the death for second place, and I think Chris won by about 2 points.

None of us deserved to win anything, really! sm56

Thanks, Foggy.

I shall join the VOC fifthwith to ensure that I can enter my car. My little lad (6 years old) is desperate to win a trophy so I shall get him out polishing until his cloth wears out. The Southern meet is very close to home, so I'll bring the whole family. Looking forward to it.

Going by Foggy & Chris's posts, you shouldn't have too much trouble in nabbing that trophy :-)

Best of luck

So is anyone else on this forum planning on attending this event?

I'll be there, not sure what car yet (it's likely going to be the Corsa...)

I'll be the one asleep, Miglia Quadrato is midnight Sat to 6-7am on Sunday which I'm driving so I plan to finish the rally drive to Popham then snoooze until people start turning up.

Yes :s

It's ok, I drove it accidentally on a rally last Sunday, came second out of 19 to a Lotus FWD Elan thingy. 83 points to 81, next competitors were at 73 points. It's better than it should be.

Plus, the MQ will have a 1912 (from memory) Dennis fire engine. It's a very different sort of rally, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miglia_Quadrato utmost speeds are not really required.
