Trip counter & mile clock dodgy

Post by Vario Si » 17 May 2005 10:06 pm

Over the weekend I did the most driving I have ever done, probably just over 300 or so miles! Feel alot more confident driving now, though still pretty cautious!

ANYWAY.....

The trip counter recorded about 11.8miles for a 50ish mile journey, whilst the clock for total miles recorded a different number of miles travelled! But still considerably less than was travelled.

Something like 20miles on trip counter and 60 on the clock for around 150 miles?

I'm guessing its a loose connection or something behind the dials in the dashboard, my brother tells me they are linked with cogs? So somethings wrong + they go at different rates, so they're connection must be dodgy also in some way I guess?

Before I get it off and have a look, any suggestions or comments?

Cheers

Simon

Yes. These things happen. My car has it's 3rd speedo and I have no idea whatsoever what it's mileage is!

The exact same thing happened to me with one of the speedos, and eventually noticed that it was intermittently jamming---whilst coasting on a smooth road you could hear it ticking as it tried to turn.

Your brother is right, the whole speedo/odometer is completely mechanical, and done with a pile of worm drives and cogs. There is a thread somewhere in this forum describing how to possibly cure it by shoving one of the cogs back in the correct way, I'll see if I can find it.

Got my new unit today (temp/petrol/clock/ REV COUNTER :D)...

So tomorrow morning I AM fitting it!

I've just noticed slight fracture to the front clear & curved plastic of the unit...

So I may try and remove only the rev counter and fit it into my unit, and maybe the mileage clock as mine is dodgy - which wll mean changing the mileage on the clock of the new one...

Not sure what to do, and how at the minute, haven't taken the other off yet so not sure how they compare.

Would of been nice to have the plastic front from the new one, as it has a blank where you would normally have a thing to change the time!

Hmm... *thinks*

(Still very happy to have gotten hold of rev counter :))

have you disconnected the spedo as well?

theres a knack to it. pull the front down so it is lying face down on the dash, then pull it forwards. wiggle it a bit, and the left-hand side can push backwards into the dahs (where the wires are), and you can pull the righthandside out thru the steering wheel without removing it..

Hmm... is that for every steering wheel? Let me give it a shot, though I've kind of already tried getting it past the steering wheel...

Yeh as haynes said I remved speedo before tilted it forward...

*tries again*

to be honest it only takes a minute to take the steering wheel off , just make sure everything is in the straight ahead position first ( front wheels and steering wheel ) saves a lot of messing around

by the way if you do decide to take the wheel off , slacken the nut but do not fully remove it , that way when you pull the wheel itself off it wont smack you in the mouth ( not that its ever happened to me you understand LOL ) then once the wheel is loose on the column remove the nut completely and lift the wheel off

you dont need to remove either of the late wheels (340 or 360 ones), some of the early 3-spokers i dont know about

Done done done!!!

Post by Vario Si » 04 Jun 2005 11:26 am

Done it :D... after you menioned about pressing in the reset button I pushed them in and tried for another few minutes and it worked :D wicked :)

For now I have just swapped the whole unit, I'll sort out the mileage clock from mine, or change the mileage on the new one - sometime!

Thanks for all the help and advice! Very much appreciated!

Car seems to idle at around 900, speedo working fine, just need to test the bulbs in the new panel etc.

Car sounds a little different! Or it might just be my imagination...

Cheers

speedo pin / changing mileage

Post by Vario Si » 09 Jul 2005 12:26 pm

I'm just having a little play with the old speedo/odometer from my old insutrument panel... I've managed to get it out of the unit.

A quick question - does the speedo pin (moving) pull straight off?

I want to get inside the thing to try and see why it was going dodgy, and so I have a better idea of how to change the mileage on my new odometer when I get round to it.

Although I know it's not a necessity to have the correct mileage, but I'm the kind of person that would like it to be right!!

And as I found out from the VOSA (via email) - somewhat interesting...

"Although it is often installed as part of the speedometer neither British
nor EC regulations mention odometers.
There are not, therefore, any set procedures laid down as to what action
should be taken in the case of the odometer not working.
The only advice that we could offer is to ensure you keep a record and
document whatever action you do take regarding the repair or replacement of the instrument."

Cheers,

Simon

Just pulled the needle off on a broken speedo handily lying next to me, it looks like it's just supposed to pull off. Certainly goes back on again, but you'll have to line it up roughly with the 0mph stop.

First attempts at pulling the pin out removed the black pin cover (which afterwards doesnt stay on the pin - keeps falling off).

I managed to get the pin out using a lot of effort, I kept thinking I was going to break the thing.

I had a play around with the mechanism, and now both the trip counter and odometer seem to be in sync - not like before when one would go up a different amount. Odd.

I realised I would not get the speedo pin back in the same place as I had not made a note of it or anything... now I realise on the back there is a hole where you see through to circular things... if you move one of these it moves the speedo pin - so you could put blue tac on it to stop the speedo pin moving while taking it off or something I guess...

Anyway, I tried putting the speedo pin back on, but it didnt want to go all the way on... using a little more force I managed to crack/break the platic middle of the speedo pin... oops.

Now... I think I won't be playing with the one in the car!!!
Apart from merely winding it back from 85,548 to 26,367 miles (if I can be bothered).
