New keys/start engine
Hey guys,
So, i'm the dumbest guy on earth and have lost my Volvo 360 door and ignition keys.. the only set i had.
I've already opened up the door by wedging open the door with a bike tire and by grabbing the locknob with a pulling tool.
Does anyone have advice on how to get up and running again with new locks/keys? Is it possible to get a replacement ignition key or should i replace the whole unit? How about the doors? Any advice is very welcome. My main car broke down and now that i need my rusty old lady the most, i can't. ugh!

Re: New keys/start engine
Well, you are pretty much buggered, but it all depends on what year your car is from or if you have a really good locksmith living nearby.
On the early cars you have one set (1 code, KA-...) for the doors, one set for the fuel filler cap (if applicable), and one set for the steeringlock.
On the 1985 (from the back of my mind) and after cars you have one set for the doors and steering lock (DF-....), and one set for the fuel filler cap (if applicable).
If the original owner of the car was quite dutyfull, and noted the keycodes in the owners manual.
Otherwise you will have to remove the doorhandle/ tailgate lock and read the code from the doorhandle cylinder/ tailgate lock frame.
If someone on here owns a set with the same code, then you can get a set of keys duplicated.
I for instance have been collecting keys and locking barrels for years now and may be able to help....
On the early cars you will have to replace the steering lock anyway as they have a seperate key (and I still do not know how the coding works).
I hope hat it helps.

Re: New keys/start engine
Hello Volvomania,
Thank you for your response. I will have a look at the cilinders of the door. It's probably more important to get those keys replaced, as i don't think many people are interested in stealing my car. I'll either replace the steering lock/ignition or find a crappy way to start the car without the keys. Are the codes for the door cilinders the same as for the trunk cilinder?
Many thanks, i really appreciate your response and time!
EDIT: The car is from '84.

Re: New keys/start engine
The codes of the door cilinders should be the same as that of the tailgate.
On a 84 car, the code for these cilinders will start with "KA", followed with 3 digits.
On the tailgate lock, it will het stamped on the inside, somewhere hear the edge of the door handle.
In the front doors, the code is stamped on the plate through which they locking pin goes.
For the steering lock, well you can replace it with a steering lock from any 300 series.
Just need you drill the 2 lockingbolts out. Replacements can be offered from born-built-beauties.

Re: New keys/start engine
Hello,
I've swapped out the ignition for a new one and at least i was able to drive to Dusseldorf last weekend for work. However, upon arriving home and trying to park the car, the steering lock locked and now i can't seem to unlock it. Any advice on this new problem
? I'm going to try and get the cilinders out tomorrow to check the KA-000 code, thank you so much for your support 'buurman'
!

Re: New keys/start engine
So you passed me on your way to Dusseldorf if you took the E313.
I suspect that the steering lock is slightly misaligned or that the wear on the column and the lock pin of the steering lock do not match.
A way to get the lock to unlock is to wiggle with the steering wheel while trying to turn the key in the steering lock.
This will take the pressure of the locking pin and let the pin move.

Re: New keys/start engine
Ah! I'll honk next time if i make the drive again
.
Thank you for your tips but i wasn't really clear in my last post. I left the old ignition around the steering wheel, and just started with the new ignition and drove. I guess i have an angel on my shoulder that it locked while parking at home. There's an angle grinder coming my way so i should be able to fit the new one properly tomorrow. I'll also look into the door locks, so it is properly fixed again and i don't have to leave my car open..
.
Dank!! Groet vanuit Rotterdam

It was more ignorance than bravery unfortunately.
I swapped out the ignition today and it's back together working. The cable of the speedometer was loose so that's fixed too, nice to see how fast i'm driving. I'll take a look at the door locks later tonight or tomorrow!
Thanks guys

Hey Volvomania,
I’m trying to find the code on the locks but it doesnt say anything on there. I took out the hatch lock, is it only on the door locks?

Re: New keys/start engine
I would love to help but I have no idea of where to find the key numbers. I can't see anything on the keys or in the 'deeds'.
Sorry, I now see I have to dismantle things to see the number, but my cars are post '85 so I think I cannot help.
Have you tried the facebook group, its about a million times more active than this forum.
Sort of a really stupid question, but is there a picture anywhere of they key you require ;-? ;-?
Is there any pattern in the key-shape and the code e.g. can you infer anything from 076 and 078??

Re: New keys/start engine
Most of my previous reply can be ignored. Have you looked at Keys In The Post? It seems they can make the key from the KA number:
https://www.keysinthepost.com/product/volvo-car-key/
From memory their copies cost about £10 and I have had a personal recommendation about them.
Problem solved ? ? Or, have I completely misunderstood ? ?
