sports air filter

Post by muggins » 23 Jan 2004 07:42 am

Hi all,
has anyone tried a K&N pod type air filter (or other sports brand) on a 360? A few people
have suggested it to me, but a local volvo guy told me that the stock intake on a 360 is the
same as on a 240 turbo and therefore designed for hi flow. He suggested leaving it as is.
Anyone know if this is true?

air intake

the volvo boy was right. fuel injected 360 is equipped
with same air filter as 240 turbo models. air intake changes without other engine or injection
modifications do not give you anything but extra noise. sm72 sm72

I fitted a k&n to my 360GLT, and true the power gains
aren't really significant, but it did seem a bit more responsive, and pumping the throttle results
in backfires! Dude!

Yes it's true. Cone filter is not good, we have rolling road and check it. Cone filter must have
air hit system and proper temperature for good work this filter, or else power going down.

I disagree, I ripped out my air box and pipe and just fitted an
intake cone. The engine sounded normal before I fitted the cone and the exhaust note was
just standard but now it turns heads when I put my foot down, people hear it coming. The
engine has more grunt sound and the exhaust note is deeper.
Try it, it doesnt do any harm, and it looks and sounds better than that horrible elephant trunk
like air box.
I will be adding a cold air intake soon.

The Air filter on its own rarely produces an improvement in
performance on its own. It may allow for a greater capacity of air to pass through, but it is not
the only restriction, until the other restrictions, the air box being a main one are also modified,
you will only get a different engine note.
As for putting on a pod filter, it will suck in the hot engine bay air and result in power loss. a
possible solution is to wall it off from the rest of the engine bay, making sure that your not
cutting off its access to air.
As for actually gaining power... the filter alone will not do it, the airbox is a major source of
restriction, so opening that up will help, the final thing that will aid in "intake performance"
would be the porting and polishing of the ports. That said, unless your skilled enough to do it
yourself, you'll be paying for someone else to do it, so its a really of what you can afford and
how far you want to go with it. I mean if you really get desperate you could replace the intake
piping with white silicon and apply a heat reflective wrap, it sounds a bit overboard, i just
thought i'd use it an example of how far you could take it if you wanted to. :) i might start a
thread on crazy do-ups for engine performance, see what runs through everyones minds :)

I intend to wall off the left and right side and add a cold air
feed from the front bumper to the induction cone.
The engine note has changed on my car, it sounded standard before, now people can hear
the exhaust note when I put my foot down. sm48

Thats good then if its shielded from the engine heat, it will also
work insignificantly better if the outside air is being channeled at the filter rather than just inside
its little compartment... while i'm at it, on my one, the intake passed right by the engine on its
way to the intake manifold, has anyone moved the filter over the other side(battery side)
successfully? I'd imagine it would make a difference seeming the intake piping would be
about 1/3 the length of stock, and it would be cooler not having to pass by the engine, has
anyone done it?

air filter

Post by mgarageu » 19 Mar 2004 07:01 pm

hi planning install volvo air meter assembly to air filter
housing from mazda/ford probe, which i already have. it is necessary to find good place for the
battery. old battery seat need to be removed completely. the car is 1983 343/360 GLT with
B19E engine. :?: you may use air filter housing from 740/940, with 4 gasoline without turbo,
B230F, i mean.

I have ripped out everything to do wioth the air filter and just
put the induction cone on the air meter. Im going to put heat shields around the cone and feed
a cold air pipe from bumper to the cone. You dont need to bother with all that plastic pipe
work, its a waste of time.

Wow, i think i might contradict my ravings from a few years ago here as i bought a 3" k&n yesterday for the MR2 but put it on the volvo to see what it did. Took the airbox completely out and put this in, unfortunately havent shielded it, but it is a temporary arrangement so i'm not too fussed. Engine note is louder and sounds a little angrier when under load, definately better, as far as power goes, i'm not sure as i havent measured it, but prior the powerband was pretty constant. Now there is a definite push when you hit 3000rpm, but whether thats from more power above, less below, or some combination of, i couldnt tell you with any accuracy. Having the pod does make a difference, better engine note, and to power, but not sure if its for better or worse.

If only I had a picture of a cone filter in a bin... sm56 sm56 sm56

...don't get me wrong, I have ITG foam filters on my carbs, but they're not there to give +20bhp VTAK y0 in their own right.

Buy one, don't buy one....but for goodness' sake don't spend more than 10s thinking about it for an injection 360, as the difference won't be worth the mental energy. Use that time profitably...I'd suggesting including the words '960' and 'throttle body' in your thoughts :)

cheers

I just want to get rid of all that horrible plastic pipework, and an airbox which entrains WARM air is just stupid IMO - I'm looking to ditch the whole lot for a cone.

What's this about 960 throttle bodies? How easy is it to adapt? Do I really want a 3 litre v6 throttle body on a 4 pot and if so why?! :D

Fair point. How about one of those in-line ones (Pipercross Viper? Am I making that up?!) ducting out of the stock cold-air-intake pipework?

960 is a straight 6 ;)....and bloody yummy! The TB is one of the major bottlenecks in the intake system, so enlarging it allows a greater volume of air in. I think the 850 one might be the same size as the 960.

cheers
