The continuing saga of Varts car (bits left over from)

Post by mac » 22 Oct 2006 03:12 pm

Having changed to a 5speed box there was left - a highly desirable 4speed !!

I just couldn't help myself - it had to come apart. I'm now certain that corrosion 'swell' caused the break out on the diff bearing housing - the crownwheel backlash/carrier bearing preload shims were well rotted (on both sides) and totally unusable. Corrosion damage had spread to the main diff casing on the 'bad' side also (and the o/s bearing housing was of course scrap as has been shown before.

The crown wheel/pinion (3.64:1) is a little worn but is re-useable. I shall probably use the case as a check jig for my gasket production.

As for the box itself the bearings and synchro rings were worn but the gears seem all ok with the exception of the reverse idler which has the usual 'grating into reverse' tooth form (ie.buggered). The mag.drain plug was a work of art - filings tree of huge proportions so something was wearing !!

The diff cover plate was a real horror - badly rusted and actually holed on the top flange return.
The covers are no longer available and I suggest that everybody cleans and repaints theirs when they get the chance (can be done on the car) or even just give a spray with anti-rust. The pics give an idea of what Varts looked like after I'd cleaned it up a bit.

Rust had spread to the plates inner face and was distorting the sealing area.

The plates I'm looking into getting made Mac, just havn't had a chance to get a good piccy before now. I'll send those pictures to a source of mine, see what he reckons, and how much. Tbh, I'd forgotten about it since the last mentions around easter time!

I'm intrigued... which bit screws the reverse on 300's? Also, why is it on almost any car, 300 or not, if it won't go into reverse, lifting the clutch up (usually can hear some kind of thunk in the rotation of a prop if you havn't been able to get in reverse with a 300 at this stage) and pressing it down again fixes the problem, and lets you select reverse easily?

I believe that's the crack pipe for people who think 4 speed boxes have shorter ratios than 5 speed boxes ;)

Keep us posted on cover progress - I think Nessy's is heavily corroded.

cheers

Just measured an 'unrusted' section of Varts old cover - 1.2mm (painted) - looks like it's pressed from 1.0mm steel. (actually allowing for 'drawing out' during the stamping it's probably 18 SWG sheet. If metric stock is used the nearest 1st.preference would be 1.00mm which is actually 19 SWG but that would have no allowance for thining to the measurement found).

Certainly not 3mm anyway.

Foggys 'crack pipe' is of course the diff breather system and the length of the 'inside' section and its angle is critical to prevent 'thrown' oil from being ejected. The little plastic 'box' on the outside end is an oil recovery catch tank
which allows any 'escaped' oil to drain back.

Lame, so that pipe seems quite essential.. I've never noticed it on my cars... I was hoping it was a straight press. I'll see what I can do!
