I don't think marinised engines run salt water cooling internally - it wouldn't last more than a couple of years! The marinised redblocks run saltwater cooling in the exhaust manifold, and freshwater internally.

I was under the impression that the Penta V8s were Chevy units.

The S80/XC90 narrow V8 would make for an interesting swap in a 360 I reckon.

cheers

It'd surprise me if they did Foggy, most of the smaller stuff I've played with is completely salt water, hence needing a full flush when you get back.

Although, thinking about it, you never do that for a yacht though, its only jet bikes and jet boats mostly, that come out after play, so I guess it'd make more sense if it was fresh water, I've never had to rinse through a yacht. Hmmm, one way to find out, I need a bit of time on the water again

Well, how do you think that boats can go to north pole and come back, they surely don't keep engines running for few months when boat is not used?

There must be some antifreeze in coolant system and that means closed cooling system.

And at least proper marine engines do have central fresh water cooling with scavenge air cooler and also sea water cooling, but those are bit different things anyway, man fits into cylinder with ease and there is own motor for cooling water (actually more than one), most advanced engines ever made those are.

Anyway if you are interested from such engines, visit this site, they build world best engines...

All proper marine engines use two parallel cooling systems as Foggy points out. The freshwater system is exactly the same as a land based application but instead of a radiator you have a heat exchanger which couples to a salt water circulation. Salt water in your freshwater will throw up big and expensive problems very quickly.

I think it's outboards which are confusing people - lots of smaller ones use salt water alone to cool them, although some big units have parallel systems also. That's why it's recommended to run them in a freshwater tank for a wee while after use in salt water. Which is something I've NEVER done :D

A lot of older marine engines do pump slatwater through them but for a very long time the water system has been closed system normaly only pumping salt water in the exhaust cooler.

The older open systems (fairly new Mastercraft boats still use it!) are a pain to gas convert as in winter the water is evry cold!

If you want a REAL volvo engine then you will need to look at a small number of volvo lorries that were fited with a V8 I belive was based on the old b18/20

That's a very good point - the B36 was two B18s bolted together. I think it came in the "Sugga" military vehicles. Tony Barrett (of Amazon fame) has a couple for sale, I believe.

(Very) Cool factor aside, it's only a 3.6, so would suck just as much as the RV8 (teehee...), but with added weight for even more suck. ;)

cheers

Though being similiar, B36 has very few same parts with B18, there are also quite big differencies, for example heads are cross flow in B36. :P

Close enough ;) Didn't realise it was crossflow though - that's pretty cool.

I did found out that W12 block should fit really well under bonnet of 360, it is shorter than redblock and not much wider either.

So, who is first to put twin turbo W12 to 360 then? 600hp :P
