Project 360 GLS mickt - Iron oxide

Post by classicswede » 27 Aug 2007 09:13 pm

As some of you will remember Mickt arrived at the Coventry meet in a nice Mk2 360 GLS. The car did look to need some work and a general tidy up but a nice honest car.
The car since failed its MOT mainly on welding. Mick aproched me to sort the car as he wanted work done that would last rather than a patch over the top to get it through an MOT.

Mick drove over to mine last weekend to drop teh car off for its surgery!

I've had a good look through teh car and its not in bad shape. There is a fair chunk of rust that needs sorting and a few mechanicl problems but nothing major.

First job is the rust around the front strut

before any cutting or welding all the wiring etc needs removing and on this side the bonnet release cable has been removed. I also pulled the carpet and sound deading back to save them from damage.

Now we can start cutting out the rust

more rust

That is it for the moment - I need to load up the pics of the patches welded in etc. I should be able to do that tomorrow

Always good to see a 300 being rescued! This thread's another fine argument in favour of a project car forum ...

How many Volvos have you got? Because when i first looked at those first pics i didn't notice anything odd, just few cars parked to side of the road. But today i looked those pictures again and realised that those pics aren't taken of just any road but they are taken in your yard. And all those cars are Volvos

Dai has a LOT of cars, so I hear ;)

Is that red oxide primer stuff, Dai? It there something special about it? I've heard the name mentioned a few times now, and am always curious to hear about such things.

What are your thoughts on grinding the welds? I realise it doesn't matter too much somewhere like that where the work is well hidden.

As soon as the 360 has a B230 under the bonnet, I must get Nessy in the garage, and get some gas for my MIG...

cheers

My estimate is about 50 volvos between me my brother and dad!

It is red oxide. I normaly used alu primer both are good at keeping the rust away. The most important thing is to clean the surface before painting.
