Mine's got 801/4/41 on it too. Might actually try fitting it this weekend then.

I reckon 70C sounds a tad cold for a fully warm engine. But dont take my word for it, I could be talking rubbish :)

Kars used to take ages (over 10-15 mins) before it heated up, although I was running mine where the oil pressure switch goes in the B14. I always took that as a sign not to thrash the engine till 15-20mins into the journey...

I know when we looked at these last time that VDO make several sensors with the same thread and internal resistances, but with differing length of sensing bits, I'm guessing a shorter one would heat up quicker (smaller, therefore less energy needed to heat it up) As long as it fits in the sump, I wouldn't worry, they all run with a 180ohm resistance.

As for temperatures, Kar would run between 70 and 90 once it was warmed up, depending on the type of driving I was doing, but I don't think ever went above that. In the winter it took ages to get off the pin, and also when the engine was stuffed it didn't rise much from what I can remeber either.

I miss my gauges :(, could always tell what the engine was up to.

EDIT:: 400's with the info centre display the word "COLD" until the temp is above 50 degs, dead useful, and the reason I'm ditching my temp gauge when I get Kar running again...

Steve, - I assume the sensor 'you don't know if it's the correct one' is the one I supplied you. It came from Volvo, in a volvo oil pressure gauge kit, with the gauge I also supplied - so I have to assume it's the correct one !.

Chris is quite right when he says there are several sensors with slight differences, but are interchangeable. I'm not sure, but the last 2 digits may indicate sensor length - but they may indicate OE supply rather than aftermarket.

Oil temperature varies enormously depending on weather, exposure of the sump, driving style, engine load and position of sensor.
10 - 15mins to come up to temp. is perfectly normal - on a winters day it could be much longer.
You can regard 50-60c as cold. 70-80 as warm/normal 90 as hot but perfectly ok. Don't forget that the engine has cooling water that is also running at anything from 75-110c as normal.

Yes I wouldn't worry Steve, as yours is the right one & mine's the differrent one. However, it seems o.k. - takes about 5-10 mins to get to 70-75c. It will be interesting to see what it registers this weekend when I'm towing the 'tinbox' up to Malton with it !

I will report my findings next week !

TTFN,

John.
