Hehe guys im greatful to be talking about this with you guys -its a tricky situation to be in carwise really :(

The 300 isnt so far fetched in terms of doing up (even costwise)- but the Jetta (even if basic etc) seems fairly sensible too.Its the electrics on my 360 and its tattyness which is concerning me atm...

Omg JTBO ofcourse! I think i posted something on your thread when you wrote it! Thats shocking for a 1997 vehicle with Galvanized bodywork- i dont think my 360 is as rusty! (hoping)

Those 700 estates are known to be good vehicles but if the economy is like the 360's then its not a major step forward as the 340/360 is kind of practical enough for most lugging/passanger needs. The thing is the size of the thing too-to drive into town etc ( something that can do a bit of everything but can still be worked on to some degree is needed).

How do you post pics up on this thread ? I want to try & get some up of the 360 here so you guys can see...

You need to upload pics somewhere, for example to photobucket or similar, then you need to take address of pic and put it into reply box here, then select address and hit button labeled 'Img', it is above this white are where you type your reply.

I don't think that 740 will run as little as 360, not especially at town, it is some 300kg more mass and it shows.

Did you have VW Vento over there or was it branded as Jetta? We had no Jetta at least in 1998, but we had Vento, totally different car than Jetta from 80's, I believe Golf III was introduced sometimes around we got Vento here, I did drove brand new Vento diesel 6 months as it was company car, I think that was big step forwards at comfort what comes to VW cars. also clutch and brakes did not require you to get those frog leg muscles like Jetta I or Golf I & partly II did required, also I remember horrible steering in Jetta I, damn it was heavy and I compare that to 360 with 185 tyres and broken strut top mounts which is not particularly light (springs were twisting and making noise as only one end of spring was turning) to steer at parking lots either.

Also those earlier VW's did know how to rust too, I think they were worse than 300.

Motors were weak in power and great in fuel consumption, however things were better with some motors in Golf II, but I think things did go worse with Golf III, Jetta or Vento is probably same car mechanically.

Seven estate, think about how large LPG capacity you could fit in there, then it would be cheap motoring :D

Well, if there is usable 300 I would stick with one, at least it will have great ventilation compared to even other volvos yet compared to other cars.

Cheers man :) Im going to put them up..

Ahh cool info man :) ne of my mates has a VW Jetta over here-his is like a Golf MK2 with a boot.
Ive heard that the steering on old non Power Asssisted VWs is quite heavy.
Rust is a pain isnt it? The last Volvo 300 (a 340 1.7) which my parents had since the early 90s (secondhand) died of rust issues but i think they lost interest -shame as the engine was still good. The trouble with the LPG over here is I think its tricky to get hold off and I think the conversions do cost several hundred pounds :? Its clever stuff though-espcially on thirsty cars

Right 1 tick..im going to try and get some pics up (its quite a task i think) but I'll let you guys see it atm...

I put one inside code tags, you need to modify them a bit so all are like one that I put into code tags, there is box in photobucket that says direct link or something like that, there you can find correct links that don't need modifying, works either way.

One image link seem to have ] slipped to wrong side of address.

If you want an MOT on that, you've got 2 choices. The bodge it for another 12months job, or the fix it properly job.

That could go through an MOT with 40quid of garage welding but won't last more than 12 months, the other option is to cut out the rear sills there and drop in fresh metal.

Garage won't do the latter, an enthusiast might. The latter will however last a hell of a lot longer, won't look sh*t and will give you a warm fuzzy feeling inside  Doors arn't MOTable on structure, so as long as there is no sharp edges.... when you get keen though, get involved and save them. It's not a huge amount of work

Sweet thanks for the advice man :D

Thats pretty good- budget doesnt mega concern me so i would probs look at option 2 (the cutting out metal one).

Thanks for the advice. Once i get her running (well the stuck fuel pump afaik sorted) then i will hunt for someone who does this kind of work-maybe some one on here?
Get le qoute etc and then it might very well happen .... :)

I guess the Bodywork rot is my main concern with her as i watched my parents 340 go from cleanish to unsafe in like a year
(I kinda feel guilty with the 360 lolz)

i totally empahise with you Speedy. The rust is the killer-the engines in these cars go on forever. Are you doing the bodywork yourself or paying someone to do it? Im probs going to ask a guy near me who does bodywork for a qoute failing that i might ask one of our members here.

I'm probably going to ignore it for ages, panic in November and do a bad amature job. Then give in and get a yellow pager to do it.

3 of my doors are looking pretty embarrassing too actually. I might filler them again but eventually I just hope to replace them and give the whole car a new colour. Here's hoping they last just one more winter. The chassis and underside however still remains solid as ever.
