360 Drive shaft shifted + 5th gear section removal

Post by Ride_on » 07 Jul 2010 10:23 pm

I've been a bit stupid today, tried to remove the drive shaft+torque tube from the gearbox without removing the clamp bolts (just loosened). By the time I realised the drive shaft wasn't moving but the torque tube was, I had managed to shift the torque tube by about 3", so now my drive shaft is not in the right place. I tried hammering it back but no joy, do I just need a bigger hammer? Or is it puller/pusher job? Will the bearings have moved?

2ndly I am replacing the gearbox-diff gaskets (fingers crossed I can get them) for leaks, but can't seem to shift the 5th gear section off the box. Do I need to remove the bolt sticking out of one of the shafts? Or again bigger hammer + try not the break the casing?

Got the driveshaft repositioned using a puller, it got easier as I needed to change the extension on the puller, then used hammer to finish off.

Just coming back to this now, still can't get the 5th gear housing off. Would take the bolt off that holds in some of bearing parts on one of the shafts, but don't know how to stop it turning. Does this bolt need to come out? Tried bigger hammer on the casing, but seems pretty firm. I just want to replace the gasket.

Ah found the answer in my 'old' manual (Haynes 715-4P2), it has to be pulled off. Of course my puller is too weak and bent, I even modified it and heated the casing but then it kept slipping out. I think a decent puller is required.

Interesting this information is not in the newer manual, I wonder why.

Never done it myself but the Green book says to engage 1st and reverse gear together to stop the shaft from turning, and then remove the bolt, spacer and the shims from the countershaft.

Then screw the bolt back in min 6 turns and use a puller to pull the plate off....sorry can't give more detail.

So does the bolt really need to come out?
