The first set of genuine Volvo 300 cavity covers to fit in the boot behind the wheelarches I saw were at the Gaydon UK meet last year. I'd never seen a set before then and I understand that they were rather rare.
Anyhow, being the sort of person I am, I decided to make one to start with to hold my CD changer, out of sight, not weighing down a fragile parcel shelf or at risk of being damaged by anything in the boot. Well I finally made a second one to fit the smaller cavity on the o/s of the car (smaller due to the fuel filler and pipework).
I would be very grateful if anyone who has the original cavity covers, pictures or access to any could get me an image of the small bottom clips which I would imagine clip into the holes already in the sidewall of the plastic in the boot along the rebate.
I fitted mine with a simple threaded insert, which fits into the already present holes perfectly (as I didn't want to drill anything or attach the lids) then a washer with a bolt into the insert to hold the panel in. The panel then simply fits over the top of the bolt and is held by the larger washer. I used some locks which once spaced correctly fitted the already present hole and recess for the catch. On the orignals it appears to be a knob which turns. My lock idea worked well for when you didn't need access behind the covers too often, otherwise it can be annoying. I'm now working on a better design. I've a few ideas of upgrading the cavity covers, but I'd like to know the exact method Volvo designed the bottom lug upon! I can imagine how it works, but I cannot find any cheaply sourcable fittings to replicate it at the moment.
Thanks.
Pete
