Hi,
What choice do i have for new speakers in a Volvo 340. It must be front speakers 4 inch by 6 inch (or 10x15 cm). I bought some speakers it was Magnat carfit 915 but the hole wasnt deep enough to fit in. The speaker was 5 cm deep the hole only 4 cm (like the old philips speaker that was in there).
What choice do i have for other speaker of this size?
thanks for your help.

this for the rear of the car? i got a pair of 6x4s from les smiths but the quality isnt too good. in the end i made myself a new parcelshelf with some 6x9s in it, they can cope with far more weight and just sound much better. left the 4x6s in thou, so now have 6 channel sound \o/

No it's for the front of the car. Near the pedals. There's only room for a 4x6 inch speaker and speaker must about 4 cm deep max. I think it is very difficult to find speakers in this size. And i know the bass is very minimal with these things, anyway thanks for your answer.

you'll probably only get origional ones. but you could hunt other cars and see whats around - my 340s got some 6" coax speakers in the door (i think) with just larger holes cut. not sure how they were fitted (came with the car) but hte bass would suggest they are deeper than 4cm

Can't fit anything deeper in there than 4cm, because i tried 5 cm speakers but the magnet got stuck already on the metal of the car, and the speaker was too far out of the hole to fit any screws in it.
I think ill leave it for now they way it is. Thanks for your answers.

I have the same problem. I think I'll just use an adapter and fit 10 cm round speakers. Adapter like this:
I think they will sound better anyway than 4x6" oval speakers. Then I'll put some 17 cm speakers on the rear shelf so there will be enough bass. Although I'll have to make the holes larger.

Thanks, i copied the link from it. It enlarges the choice for a new speaker.

When I was doing mine, I managed to drop Alpine 6x9's into the front doors, gives a nice bit of bass up front! Made ply cabinets for them, then merged them into the existing door pockets, I'll try and get some photos sorted to show you what I mean.
The other thing that you want to make sure is that you can get a secure fixing, as the door cards aren't the strongest in the world.

I think ill leave it alone for now, with the old speakers in the doors. Thanks for replying.

Not sure of the depth, but I wouldn't look further than JBL's GTO (like Hugh's front door speakers) 4x6s. Having said that, I'm talking about for use in the rear pillars, not the front kick panels.
Two thoughts...
1) They aren't going to sound very good so far forward.
2) Why not use some wooden spacers to increase the available depth?
cheers

I'd really would like to see some photos because when I bought my 340 its
front speakers were already broken. I've dreamed about decent speakers for a while now...

you'd get a better sound with them in the parcelshelf imo - he's only got them in the doors cos he's got a raelly big setup in the boot. they are essencially down where the 'big' door pockets are in some car, right by the drivers feet

This is the oly photo I have at the mo, and its dark outside!!!
This was taken during the build, afterwards I cut down the origanal speaker grills and mounted then back on the doors so that there isn't a great hole. They arn't much wider than the old door pockets (or otherwise I've just got used to them, I'll have a look tommorow on my other one).
Also has the huge advantage of not being noticed from the outside!
