New starter Motor for 360GLT

Post by kelvingenders » 14 Jan 2011 12:18 pm

Guys, just wondered if there is an alternative starter motor i can run in a 360 GLT B200EA. Mine is dying. Would there be a 200/700/900 series that uses the same which i could source in Australia. This would be cheaper than getting a 360 from Europe.

Should be possible to overhaul it cheaply, usually just need brushes and maybe bushes. I did my 1980 345, cost about £5 for the parts but I did buy the end pinion bush from Volvo at the time. I rubbed down the commutator aswell, sounded like new afterwards. Otherwise an electrical refurb place should do it for about £40.

Also yes 200/700/900 are similar, I think the turbo starters are smaller due to the lower compression.

Harsh..

But probably true! I would think any red block starter would do the job, though considering parts out here, then getting a starter motor reconditioned would probably be a option.
Kelvin, there is a place by me ( WA ) that recons starter motors, I can get a price for you, but I dunno how much postage would be. Bound to be somewhere nearer you.

Thanks for all the advice.

300 AUD to Auto electrician to remove recon and reinstall

140 AUD for me to remove and Auto Electrician to repair

I wonder which one I'm going to pick!!

Yeah, remove it yourself. Its dead easy, only 2 bolts IIRC.

One other thing, if its going slow, have you checked the connections? The Earth connection to the engine block is a favourite. Also, the + lead coming off the battery, particularly if its one of those screw jobbies, instead of the original crimped/soldered type. Don't just look at them, remove them and soak them in contact cleaner, and then once you've reassembled them, smear plenty of vaseline on the top to stop moisture getting in.

Hope that helps.

BTW, how are you guys holding up with the flooding? I'm planning to visit QLD in a couple of months, do you reckon it'll all be gone
