Up until about 7pm, it was undrivable...missing, spitting, etc. My mates brother - a motorsport engineer - suggested a vac leak (there obviously was one, but I didn't think it was bad enough to cause such extreme symptoms - apparantly DCOE style carbs are affected much worse than normal ones). A pair of ancient gaskets later...hurrah, good as new.

The K cam isn't in yet, and they're jetted for the original retardo airbox, but with the choke control most of the way out it drives fairly well...it's just a bit of a PITA at idle, as the correct under load choke position floods it at idle, while the correct idle mixture makes for a 3000rpm idle speed...doh! Time for a twiddle with ye olde screwdriver :)

However...the performance increase it just ridiculous. It feels to pull in third like it used to in second. And the noise...hot damn! I just took a Volvo-hating coursemate for a spin, and his words were "it sounds like a rude scooby". I might shoot a bit of videoage later if you're all well behaved :-P

cheers

Wohoo, that is great news :D

Those carbs look like they have meant to be there, that Solex in other hand looks like some aftermarket part ;)

Oh please make a vid, I would love to hear how that growls :P

Quentin, please go ahead! Thanks for your help already, but I need all the additional information I can get. It runs, but it's not too drivable. I'm planning to get it all set up properly fairly soon (with Husky's help), but any simple tweaks I can do in the meantime will help hugely.

One problem is that it's jetted way lean, but you can richen it up sucessfully using the cold-start circuit (an enrichment valve in place of a choke). That works fine when you're driving (as you can see), but there's far too much fuel on idle. Easy you might think - just push the 'choke' in when idling. However, setting the idle speed mixture correctly on the choke makes it idle at 2500-3000 rpm. Unlike a normal carb, you don't get a nice idle speed screw, and even if there is, there isn't a nice ADDHE manual you can look it up in! There's got to be a way to adjust that, but I'm a bit busy to look into it right now. The car is again capable of getting me to the shops and back, and that's good enough for the moment!

Anyway, to the vid...2.5mb
http://www.foggyjames.co.uk/inbox/carbnoise.wmv
(Give it ~30 mins to upload...damn broken internet connection! Dial-up is literally faster!)

How loud it is in reality is hard to grasp from that, but you get the idea. The nice thing is that they're just as quiet as the original on cruise, but boot it and....enjoy :)

cheers

My car is sounding pretty normal at idle, there is little booom from exhaust of course, but when I floor it and rpms get close to 2000 everything around gets dead quiet or that it sounds as there is this huge noise coming from my engine, that ask more revs :D

So I think it is little same kind, but of course 4 intake runners is always giving much better growl :)

Hurry, hurry Internet connection, I wan't to see vid :P 'sm18'
