360GLT final drive ratio

Post by brad360 » 13 May 2005 07:47 am

My 1986 Volvo 340/360 owner's manual tells me, p 101:

Reduction ratio, final drive

5 speed 1.4 litre models 3.82:1
4 speed 1.4 litre and GLT 3.64:1
1.7 litre models and GLE 3.45:1
2 litre* carb models 3.27:1
*(2 litre low octane models 3.64:1)

The gearbox ratios are the same for all configurations, except some havea 5th. No mention of diesel.

****

I'm wondering if all the 360GLT models had the 3.64 final drive, or if the older, 84/85, leaded models might have had the 3.27. Anyone know? Is the diff very similar to any 240 series Volvo? I wouldn't mind swapping my 3.64 for a 3.27, 11% faster at same engine revs. I know it's not as good for burnouts, but more relaxed cruising, better economy, less wear.

final drive ratio

Post by brad360 » 14 May 2005 11:33 am

I'm surprised by that diesel drive ratio. I thought it might cruise at 100km/h at 2000rpm or something.

Dunno about having 11% larger diameter tyres, might have a few probs going over bumps. Maybe raise the suspension, could make an off-road safari 360GLT...

So is there any chance of a 3.27 ratio being on an earlier 360GLT?

Could a crown wheel and pinion be found in another Volvo? 240 or something?

Is the diff assembly similar on a 240?

Looking at the numbers I think 3.64 is 40/11 and 3.27 is 36/11 (crown wheel teeth/pinion)

I have thought my 360 could do with some longer legs in 5th.

Was the 2 litre carb model with 3.27 final drive very common? Any opinions?

You won't find a GLT with 3.27 diff. They just did not build them.
The B200K models are pretty common. All non injection 360's up to 87 have them i think.

i have a 3.27 c/w + pinion (and a 4.7  )and would never think about using it if you wanted it !! a whole unit would be easier to fit though.....

c/w & pinion

Post by brad360 » 18 May 2005 06:06 am

I know someone who goes to UK every so often.

Or maybe you could post them to me?

What do you think they weigh?

The pinion and c/w did live together in a housing? I mean, they're not in a big bucket mixed up with dozens? You're meant to keep the pair together.

yup 36/11=3.27
the c/w is still on diff ,but no housing, so pinion is seperate. my brother snapped a casing in half  ,so we used the 3.27 casing. dont know what the weight is,but can find out and shipping i havent a clue what the cost would would be. £50 or £60 ??? Image [/img]
