Adding a Rev counter

Post by Vart » 04 Jun 2005 11:10 pm

I've read a couple of posts about adding a rev counter and was wondering two things

does anyone know where rev counters can be obtained
and
Is it likely the wires are there for a simple plug in operation on an '85 1.4 dl?

Also

is the operation to mount a 'next-to-ashtray' clock difficult?

85 is unlikely. my 84 doesnt have the wiring in place and the dashboard cant take one. you may be lucky thou, as my 86 took it fine.

its a simple plug-in operation if it will work - you can get one from a 360 or 340 1.7 (or even some 340 1.4s).

the clock will probably need some manual wiring but its easy to do.. just pull off the old panel, locate a brown and black (iirc) wire, wire em to the clock and plug it in.. wiring the bulb in is harder, but not *hard*..

the colossos clock mounted beside the speedo can go, it runs out of puff by about 11 and loses ages through the last 10 minutes of the hour. if it doesn't have the connector is it possible to add one or is it hard. i've not done anything to a car's electrics beside adjusting the infernal clock so is it wise to tinker with it?

you should be in one of 2 situations

1) dash will have space for the rev counter and all the wiring, the rev-counter will fit right in, a 5 min job

2) dash will have no space and no wiring, best option is to buy a complete dash with counter, replace the speedo with yours if you want to keep the origional milage, then add the wiring in (1 wire from the reenix to the loom behind the dash i *believe*) yourself

incidentally - does anyone know what pin on the dash loom gives the revgauge its signal

well from looking at pictures and and like the speedo size and clock size are the same and in cars with the rev counter they look the same so i'd imagine it would fit.

what sort of price would a rev counter set me back?

I bought a whole intrument panel off Ebay for £6.99 + P+P

I personally havent seen many on ebay though... but people have them around... I was going to get one off Adam - well he was going to get one from his local scrap yard, and that was gonna be £10-£15 for the whole instrument panel again!

I fitted my new instrument panel today - am very chuffed although it did take me longer than 5minutes! but now I think i can change it in around 10 probably.

umm is there a guide for retards like me on how to get at the dials. i've read a few other posts which all make it fairly clear but i'm not sure about what to look for and how to get the old clock out. also there are two contradicting posts which say a 1.4 '85 dl can easily have a rev counter (RPM monitor post) and one that says its unlikely (previous reply to this post). any ideas?

you cant tell without looking at it.

when you take the dash out, behind hte clock there should be a bit of the green stuff should have 2 contacts on it - if there is a plastic 'end' on it, it will take a revcounter (i think), otherwise it wont..

to swap the counter in, take off every scren on the back of the dash and hte front panel will come off, then take off all the screws from behind the clock, slide it out and slide in the revcounter. then just push the plastic end into the pins on the counter..

How does the big white box with all the dials come out? it looks to sort of slide out but it won't move. there doesn't look to be any screws holding it in

undo the 2 screws above the dash, then reach round behind the dash from below/to the right of the steering wheel, and unplug the 2 multipin connectors and the speedo cable. the white box should them move freely around. pull the top forwards, to tip it, then move the box around and slide it out thru the whole in the steering wheel.
