Senders and Stuff

Post by Chris_C » 30 Jul 2005 07:28 pm

Anyone know where I can get an extension tube tapped M14 fine (M14x1.5 that is) male at one end, and female at the other? Needs to be about 65mm long, as my sender won't fit in the B14, cos of the magical flat tapped hole that poke out. I think they are for fitting bits to lift the engine out. I can't find these extensions anywhere, not even some M14fine outside tapped tube and a coupler.

If anyone has come across this stuff in there travels, or has fitted senders to the B14, please let me know!

Didn't think of them, and yet thats where I got some of my bits from. Hopefully I'm having one machined as we speak... called in some favours

Right... a solution for fitting gauges to a B14.4E. I know Adams vaguely intrested in this, hope it helps.

Anyone who has had to replace the oil pressure switch on the 1.4 will know that someone (I would say a women... but I still have scars from similar comments ;), so we shall say nothing of the sort) has stuff a couple of protrusions in the block casting, so you can attach lifting stuff to it I guess. Well, thats useless for fitting gauges, cos VDO pressure senders are too large to fit. Also, trying to get the right sender, with the right block thread, the right gauge pressure range, and the right built in pressure switch (to replace the one you're taking out) is gonna cost you some proper silly money. Being a student, I did this the true Chris way, and played the ebay game until something that would work came in at the right price.

Also, I didn't like the idea of sticking an oil temp sender in the sump. I likes having the ability to offroad (yeah, ok, so I have a bodykit on the way. I have a plan around that one). So, I got a t-piece to fit both pressure and temp in the same hole in the block. Great.... T-piece, even though smaller than the pressure sender, still doesn't fit in the block cos of afore mentioned protrusions. So... call in some favours (as it doesn't seem like you can buy these) and get a funky extension tube made. I would have made it meself, but didn't have access to either a lathe, or a big enough tap and die pair (I had everything up to the size smaller, but hey, always the way).

Cue pictures, stage left:

One of mentioned protrusions (I like that word) that gets in the way

The other protrusion. Proper engineering.... ish. Ignore the oil, I hadn't tightened it up at this point.

Everything is all good, and I'm doing an extended test to see if the different place of the temp sender is affecting readings now.

CHRIS' BIG WORDS OF WARNING OF THE DAY:

Make up a bracket to hold this lot. The B14 shakes like a big shakey thing, and if any of this snasps will drain your engine of oil. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!! Oh, and make sure your wires are tied, they are a tad close to the alternator there for catching in things.

END WARNING

I like that solution...
Protrusions... well that's a word I don't use every day...
