Dumb question: B20 head on B21ET

Post by Damir130 » 18 Aug 2005 02:07 pm

Hi everyone.

Time has come to start messing about with the turbo engine for the 360 again. Original plan was to use the b21ET block that I have lying about in the shed and combine that with the current b20 head and cams.
The purpose would be to make it possible to ditch the mechanical injection system in favor of a standalone EFI solution (that and the slightly hotter cam).

Somehow though I faintly remember reading somewhere that this could pose some problems...haven't got a clue what they were...piston/valve clearance?

Any help or suggestion are more then welcome.

To start with the valves are different. The turbo valves a sodium cooled.
I think the chamber volume is differnet(not sure on that)

I guess you meant B200 ?

B20 is pushrod engine and B21 is overhead cam engine, heads are not compatible.

You are completely right..It is indeed a bog standard 1988 360 GLT B200 engine..

Any other ideas are welcome. Are there any easy sources of intake manifolds that have injectors in them?

All 300-serie injection engines had such intake manifold, also 530-head would be good to start with, with little work it flows same as stock 531.

I had carb engine, B200K and I installed B200e intake and fuel parts, I did not used stock ecu, I installed Megasquirt that controls fuel and stock B200K Renix controls ignition.
I'm soon getting ignition parts so I could make Megasquirt to control ignition too.

B200K head has water circulation circuit holes for intake manifold, those need to be blocked if using that head.

I don't see any big problems to use B200 head to B21 block.
Some 200 and many 700 series cars had distributor at one end of camshaft and it has not space to sit there on 300 series cars with Volvo engines, but I think B21 had distributor on cylinder block so no problem there either.

The 740/760 turbo and all late model injection engines about 1990 on hove the injectors in the manifold.
