47MPG with 343 1.4??!!

Post by oobik » 01 Apr 2016 10:43 pm

Hi,

Sooo, I am finding here and there written that some quys get around 47MPG(ca 6l/100km) with the small lovely 1.4 block. I am wondering, where is the trick? In all the official spreadsheets and tables I see that this engine will use 8.5-9.5l/100km, wherever you drive. Is it because they replace default gearbox to the M47, five speed one?

Thanks!

I got 45mpg average in one of mine (85 3 door). It ran very well, is the lightest model and we had 4 star fuel. I also ran it on semi-synth and 4 prong plugs which helped.

No special driving just gentle, mostly motorway for about 25min each way to work and back. I can get 40 in my 940 but only with special driving and after the drive is fully warmed up. its also a lite model.

I have heard that plugs help with that engine a lot, is that really so?

The thing is that when car is agile, snappy I tend to enjoy different kind of driving. If it offers cruising as an experince itself I go along with it very well. My 740 and 940's are quite decent performers, engines are snappy, cars are lightened, stiff springs and good schocks, all the bushings are restored, they offer gorgeus experince....but I miss the "standard" volvo feel. So I fell back to standard schocks and semi stiff springs, threw in n/a B230FB and made that as daily driver. It does everythig little bit and seems to offer all around best experince. I would not like to ruin 343 this way, making it something which it is not in it's design :)

Can you comment, guys who drop B230FT or n/a B230 to 340/360, do they see much better MPG than same engine in 740/940?

Nice to see someone to be alive in this forum!

It should be better but not massively. 30mpg+ should be easy with gentle driving (my sister gets 30 in my 940 turbo)lets say 35, but the lean idle might allow 45mpg with hyper miling pulse and glide.

Most people are not so interested in power and mpg, but this is where I am. I shall eventually fit an mpg meter to the 360 turbo, but its been away recently. When I get a chance o test it I shall publish results.
