Weird gauge

Post by Fuse » 07 Aug 2004 09:10 pm

In our GL there is this weird gauge wich has a picture of a shifter and a light below it. Is this some kind of stripped version of economy gauge or what? It is located at left of the cluster, where the economy gauge usually is. It has never worked though so I suppose that previous owner has disconnected it.

It's supposed to indicate the best moment to shift into another gear... It's a "very basic" econometer! And you have that on your 360 GL? sm14 I thought it was only for the B14/17

Ok, I suspected something like that. Yeah it is in my GL but it isn't connected. :P Previous owner of this car was a Volvo mechanic so he might have putted it there..

sm16 I want a 360 GLT Turbo! A Volvo dealer could deliver that in Finland / Sweden? or was that only a presonal modification?

In Finland Volvo dealers installed turbo kits in new cars, so it was close to factory turbo. I think it was R-Sport item.

I would like to have that too, but those are very rare, I think that there is more selfmade models than original turbos.

I hate that I tested years ago Audi Quattro Sport with rally spec turbo engine, turbo just is so much more, there is no naturally aspirated engine that comes even near to real turbo cars feeling.

So I hate it because I would need turbo to have again that feeling of pure enjoy. :D

In GL it is that R-Sport kit installed by Volvo dealer which Jtbo mentioned with few modifications. About GLT im not sure who has installed it because there is extra ECU etc.. so it seems more like a personal mod than kit by Volvo. :P

The only "official" R-sport kit I know for the Volvo 300 is the R-kit for B19 engine, with the twice carb... sm1 Not a turbo version...

Yeah, I think those turbo kits were originally 240 R-Sport kits but Volvo dealers here installed some in 300-series also.

I think Fuse has it bang-on here - the only Turbo kits ever fitted to road cars were meant for 240s.

Obviously there are a lot of B230ET/FT engine-swaps out there...but they're all custom.

Some early cars (343s) were fitted with turbo redblocks for rally cross, but not road use. A 2.3 16v (UBER rare R-Sport 16v head! Not the one from the B234) twin Solex 48 carb unit was available in the very early 80s. It produced 228bhp (More than an 850 T5!!) at 7200rpm.

The R-Sport 16v head alone was £4000!

cheers

You can purchase 16V R-Sport heads from S.A.M in Sweden. No idea of the cost though... :P That 228hp was without turbo pretty impressive. :P
