Rallying a Brick

Took the 360 for a flog on the weekend to check a Gravel Rally event. Noticed that these things actually handle pretty well on the dirt. After driving thousands of Km on dirt in a Landcruiser for work I was impressed with how solid and confident it felt. Has anybody modified a 360GLT for rallying? What mods have been done to the suspension/brakes/driveline? Cheers, Dusty.

I'm trying to modify mine on a budget. Suspension, is almost sorted with slightly stiffer springs, uprated dampers and polybushes at the front.
Rear brakes are being overhauled with new eveything, the fronts are standard at the mo, but I'll probably pick up some grooved/drilled discs next month and some M1144 pads as a temporary measure. Also I'm using the more open mk2 GLT alloys and have removed the foglights for better brake cooling.
Driveline is completely standard. I'd really like an LSD but I havent got the money to pay for one of those
As you say, that standard car is pretty good on the loose stuff, but hopefully mine will be a bit better by the end of the summer, ready for some road rallies, and a visit to the Wales Rally GB!

what diff are you talking about, Carl?
Can you buy an LSD for the 300-series?!

I want an LSD... can't afford it for a while, but I WILL get one in, somehow. Just need to work out how now. Might see how much a custom from somewhere like gripper is.

300's definintely need an LSD, even in stock form I think an open diff is at its limits, its quite easy to get the unloaded tyre spinning up - especially on tight turns. Trouble is custom work is expensive, and the trouble is none of us know what power/coast figures would be best use for a 300.

Maybe some playing around in a sim like rFactor may help, as you can change those two figures to get the diff just how you like it

The 300 never come with a factory option LSD. But I assume there are some out there that were used in rallycross etc. But you can always get an aftermakrket one, but that means big bucks!!!

you CANT get an LSD that fits right in in a 300.. Volvo had some original ones, but that was few.. a guy in Finland has it..
You can modify one from a 1031 240-axle, but takes some time to modify..
I have also thought about modifying an DANA Detroit Locker.. but it will take some time..

jtbo had the locker made by HÖR but he has sold it.
Some people have fitted the internals of 1031 in 300-series diff casing but that needs some grinding and modding as those wont fit to rotate without some modifying.
And of course you can have your custom locker made at some shop which manufactures drivetrain parts for rallycars but that will cost a lot..

So like I said you can get them

And you can definately get one made, afterall, it's just a standard diff. Someone like Quiafe would probably do it, but as I said that will be big bucks!

But Quaife would be about hundred times better than that HÖR Clutch LSD that I had, why I hear, well Torsen and Quaife are best things to get more grip, both work same but have different shaped gears in them.
Those are incredible in performance track use, maybe not so good at off road, but basic idea is that they transfer power to wheel that have more grip, so just opposite than standard open diff, it is much better than any clutch or locker thing for going fast around track.
For drifting I would say that locker is better as it is kind of welded diff, where clutch type lsd is slipping always a bit. Qualfe and torsen are not too good to be used for drifting, it is not so predictable and way how those work is not ideal for that.
Viscous coupling lsd is good only for when you need bit more tracktion to get started from lights but it has no use for performance use.
There is qualfe diffs available for 240, not too expensive either, they had price on their web page and fitting 240 diff to 300 is not too hard if you have access to machinery and few extra diffs to tamper with.
If I would have money and possibility to work with it, I would make new diif from qualfe diff and 240 1031 diff, it would be strong and it would grip like crazy

Quaife said £600/ea for a clutch LSD when I enquired, and they'd need an order of 10.
cheers
