First, hi to all members of this site, since i register three hours ago, and I'm happy that I found site with owners of good-rolling Volvo cars. I should get my fathers Volvo 340 GL in several months ( as soon as i pass his driving tests ), and I'm looking forward to that.

Well here's my first question...

Since it's not written in owners manual, i do not know when to change chain, belt and mackerel ?
It'll soon get to 100.000 km(s) and i think it's time to change something of those above...

Hello, if its a 1.4, the chain never needs changing but a 1.7 should have the cam belt changed after that sort of mileage. It would also be worth changing the fan belt. I am confused by the mackeral - in English, that is a fish. Have fun.

Sorry for misunderstanding with ( mackerel - word - i got this translation from my language to English...sorry again ). I meant sprocket-wheel ..when to change that ?

do you mean tensioner by any chance?

dont know much about these cars so cant help you there im afraid...

st johns wood is the only underground station that hasn't got any common letters with mackerel. so there.

There's no service interval for timing chain, tensioner and sprockets for these.

If the oil has been kept clean they shouldn't wear out at all. Something else will break first If the chain starts rattling or getting noisy, then you might think about it, but if the car has been looked after it shouldn't be a problem.

My English is good, but i have a lack of words for car parts (know only basic stuff...some of engine, but tensioner never crossed my mind....
until now.....
I do not have same dictionary to back me up with words, so i searched for some online translations.....they messed me ( and this conversation ) up...
OK now I'm really shame on myself...( after this kind of conversation I'm REALY thinking of buying it )

Chain has been cleaned from time to time, but Volvo was in garage for five years ( from 1991-1996-7 ) and after that it had repairs on engine and some other parts.....
After that it had services regularly....i guess chain doesn't need changing.
I'm in two minds of changing tensioner and sprockets, but if there's no time interval for changing those parts, i could change them later...

Do not mention that something will break first.....here is extremely expensive to get original parts not mentioning the used ones...

only service to the chain ever is needed when the tensioner gets worn out. this leads to the chain, touching the casing (housing) or cover plate.

this produces a 'rattling' noise.

that the chain might break, have never even heard of it happening
not even on engines with more than 400.000 km on it!!

so.. no rattling noises = no worry for the rest of its life.

It's testement to this forum that people where more amused by it than deliberately rude, I went onto a certain foriegn language website not a million miles away from here when my father and I where going to catalan to watch some rugby.
My french reading is fair but writing is pretty poor, I had the basic gist of what I wanted to say and tweaked it in babelfish to get it gramatically correct. the result was that when I asked if anybody was local to where we were staying, and fancied coming to a rugby league match, match came across as "allumette" which means match, but the kind you strike, not the kind you play! The others on the forum understood what i had said but decided to be very rude and... well, French about it so I never ended up meeting any of them and probably had a better time for it!
I did however go back and said we'd had a great time, and linked them to the local news articles and pictures of our very own Agincourt!

On a related note, I love "Engrish", where something has been translated badly from Japanese into English by somebody who clearly can't speak either, the results are always fantastic!

Uf......nice to know that online-translation services I use, didn't translate that badly ( only hit some kind of fish instead of sprocket )....
