Drivetrain weak points

Post by Bello » 22 May 2007 05:40 pm

I'm off to Lydd in Kent for a bit of track action in a couple of weeks where the car will have to endure a 350 mile round trip and a whole day of serious abuse (clutch kicks, drifto action, hard launches).

Currently the car has standard power but i was still wondering if anyone could put my mind at rest.... How tough are these cars, am i likely to break anything imparticular?

Basically i wanted to bring a few spares with me just incase so any advice would be ace, thanks. 8)

Doubt you'll break anything with standard power - some of that is how some of our cars get treated on a daily basis

Is it a 340 or 360 though btw? Prop splines are a bit weak on 340's

Steve have said everything :)

Just keep and eye on the propshaft.

Take it out before the track day, see it's condition and put it back in the correct way

I've a 340... ever since I've had a 1.7 I've been launching hard and dumping the clutch between 1st and 2nd for 18months now, you have a way to go ;)

Having said that, the props can go... so have a nose at it before hand!

Bear in mind though that he'll be saying 'Bah' in a few weeks when his prop lets go in spectacular fashion :P

Seriously though they're pretty strong, but considering that even stock power driven reasonably sensibly can make them go I wouldn't treat them that harshly all the time. A track/drift day should be fine though.

I think i might buy some spares ready...

I haven't had the car on axle stands yet to have a good look underneath so has anyone got a diagram or picture of the parts that go?

Has the prop got female ends that slide in either end at gearbox and clutch bellhousing ends?
I saw a prop for sale on ebay and it looked like two female ends with clamps for either end to clamp onto male ends, can you buy the male splines as well somewhere?

Hope that made sense lol :? :)

Ohhh and if anyones got the parts i need for sale pm me a price :)

Yeah, you've basically got it, there are 2 female ends with square clamps that do up with a 6mm allen bolt, so make sure you have a good socket hex bit (halfords do a 6mm one individually for a couple of quid, and halfords tools unlike the rest of the shop, rock, I used one of theres to take my prop off after shearing a genius creation of bits of sockets and allen keys... save the hassle and buy the socket ;))

The inside of the ends of the prop are rubber, and the main problem, although I havnt seen it is the rubber loosing its attachment to the outer ali piece, so then it is just a case of needing a new prop.

dont forget that the prop will fall off if its A not in the right place and B its not done up tight enough.....not that this happend to me or anything..

errm also the prop must go all the way back that it can,

if it does fall off while your moving ..you will hear a noise in the tunnel a loud rattle type noise and also you wont be able to acclerate, well if this happens step on the clutch right away and slow down into a safe spot.

nothing sould be hurt if your pritty quick  all you would have to do would be to put it back on, it normally falls of from the back end.

if the rubbers go, do the same as above then you must replace prop.

if the splines go...if its the female end thats damaged new prop if its other i think you would need gearbox and clutch housing or somthing.

1 good thing to do is make sure every thing is tightened correctly INCLUDING WHEEL NUTS! tire presures bassically every thing they say in retro car magazine to do before a race/track day.

Any way good luck and more importanly have fun!
Cheers
