Before I part with my cash for the Volvo recommended NGK BPR6E plugs for my B19E, I was wondering what the 'alternative' BPR6ES plugs are for? I'm assuming they're a bit colder and the S stands for sport. Also, anyone looked at the NGK Iridium IX's? I believe the BPR6EIX will fit. Bit worried that running this cold will mean I get oily plugs when driving in a restrained fashion.

I suspect that the use pf precious metals in spark plugs has got more to do with alchemy than actual performance - but am interested in what the V3M community thinks.

Cheers for that - that means the iridium plugs are the same temperature as OEM, but with claimed higher performance figures

NGK BPR6ES is a good plug, I use the same.. No need for those platinum plated trendy multi-point thingys. Colder plug if your engine is highly modded, 6 is fine for stock turbos also.

Redblock seems to like NGK plugs, for example over Bosch. Many highly modded redblocks run normal BPRxES series and they work fine.

I'm also an NGK spark plug lover, but just remember Aaron, aside from the temp rating, what can a spark do? A spark is a spark, so any claimed higher performance is rubbish. The only thing I'm not sure on with Iridium's is if they last longer, but tbh, for the price difference, I'm not going to find out.

I deal a lot with spark plugs and trust me there is a difference.

The S is for supressor

Iridium plugs are for LPG as a replacment for platiunum as platinum is not suitable for use with LPG. They do last a lot longer than normal copper core plugs but in a 300 are not worth the extra expense.

Because iridium and platinum plugs can have a much finer tip the gap can be wider than with copper core plugs.

For teh 300's I normaly use teh NGK v groved plug but I will often fit Volvo plugs in the 340 because I can buy them at a good price. The only plug I say to keep away from from is campions in volvo engines.

Yes indeed, don't ever use Champion plugs as they are the worst made, most unreliable piles of junk possible. I made the mistake of using them once and then sent the whole set back to Champion for an explanation and refund enclosing the puchase reciept and the garage diagnosis/ repair bill of 4 DAYS later (I was on holiday at the time and didn't have the time or facilities to investigate the rough running).
The plugs were fitted on the day of purchase, the car did 20 miles to and from work the day after and then drove from Derby to the Ardnamuchan peninsula on day 3 before it started misfiring. I then drove to Fort William on day 4 where the car was dropped off for investigation. 1 plug lost all of the ceramic tip, and another lost about half the tip so it was only running on 4.5 cyls. This was after about 450 miles of use.

Champions reply was basically "well these things happen - tough".

Needless to say I won't use them again......

These days you can not trust new parts.

With my new engine i use Bosch super 4's as they are fairly good value at trade of £11.99, although i swear by NGK plugs!!!!

We just use the NGK BPRxES in the appropriate heat range for whichever car it is.
