how easy is it to install these puppys?
Considering i cant remeber seeing a coil pack in the engine bay etc. and there normally 3 wire units.

Not as easy to install as the OEM one I'll be willing to bet, that's more or less just plug and go.
Is there a reason why you want an aftermarket one?

It's not hard as long as the renix has a rev counter output (should be a grey wire from memory). The renix has the coil built in. Even if the renix didn't have a wire, depending on the rev counter, you might find that you can wrap a wire around the king lead, and the EM field is usually enough to trigger a rev counter. Both the grey with and the king lead way would guve you 2 pulses per rev, which is what the stock counter needs, and I'm guessing is the same for an aftermarket. The only other 2 wires you would require are +12 and gnd, preferrably switched ign for the +12.
Depends if you want the try hard 12" aftermarket gauge with shiftlight, or to look standard as to which you get I'd imagine

aftermarket for the shiftlight function mainly but i know where my shift points are at the moment.
and because i want it on top of the dash so its more visable.
wheres does the OEM rev counter go to? mines an 89 1.4 340
No problem wiring it in +/- its was more wheres the feed etc
i shall whip the dash out over the weekend again amd try and see this grey wire.

The stock rev counter goes in the dash next to the speedo, I assume you have a clock there now.
Unless you mean where does the wiring go...

yeh ive got a big ol' clock there.
So its a grey wire is it the only grey wire out of the 2 plugs?

Should be pin 5 of the LH of the 2 plugs according to the green books, which is claims is black, but I'm sure I used a grey wire... To help you orientate, pin 2 of that plug is earth, i.e. brown. Your car currently uses pin 6 for power to the clock on a pink wire.
Ahh, ok, looking at p58/9 of the wiring green book (can be downloaded if you look further down the forum, very useful) the wire out the renix is grey, then turns black.

Usually tacho's take their signal off the negative terminal of the ignition coil... cou can also wrap a pickup wire around the ignition cable as a coil, this will also pick up enough signal.

Chris is right, should be the grey wire out of the left-most plug on the renix supposing you are facing the renix from the side where the plugs are

facing it from sat inside so smallest one is on the left the fuel gauge side biggest on the speedo side.

sorry to bring this one back up.
Just got my rev counter and a few other guages through the post and im looking at the wiring diagrams.
now as said the rev counter should go to the coil negative, would i be right in asuming the rev counter lead from the renix is connected to the coils negative? so this should all work correct once wired in.
