Progress at last

Post by CarlD » 20 Aug 2007 12:30 pm

As some of you may remember that we've not had much luck with our volvos recently, with the scrapping of our Mk2 340 and the engine seizing in the other 340. Well after a lot of chasing around i eventually got an offer from a friend for the use of his driveway for a month to sort it out and a week last Sunday (Thanks to Adams help) we picked up a replacement engine from a local scrapyard. The following Tuesday night we towed the car down to our friends and then on the two following nights i disconnected everything connected to the engine, labelled everything and took plenty of reference photos and sorted out the hire of an engine hoist for Saturday.

Anyway Saturday came and with only a bit of grief with the prop shaft the engine was out. :D Oh it poured down with rain at the same time :( I spent the rest of the day cleaning the new block and planning the next move. Which comes to a question, I'm going to put a new cam belt on the new block for the hell of it, but would it be worth doing water pump at the same time as i'm sure i've read that somewhere?

I'm sure there will be more questions to follow.

Cheers
Carl

I would do, not too expensive either - just make sure you clean all the gasket off as when i did mine i missed some and it leaked. In my defense it was dark and halogen spotlights create shadows!!!!!!!!

No, its not reusable you should get a new gasket with the new pump. The old gasket will have welded itself to the block, and mine was a git to get it all off.

Nice one Carl, glad to hear you're still sticking with them. I had a load of grief gettin ghte prop off mine too when I pulled the engine out, but that was using an inch of 6mm allen key in a 6mm socket. Went ot halfords in the end to get the proper 6mm socket end key, and it popped straight off, same with the steering rack (uses the same annoying bolts) Well worth the £3 or whatever it was.

When it comes to putting the prop back on, don't grease the splines and make sure you tighten up the prop bolts to the correct torque with a torque wrench. The relevant green book will have the setting, 35Nm off hand, but check it.

Don't need to change the waterpump if its looking OK, spin it up by hand though and make sure its not making any grating noises or anything. Its not driven on the timing belt so if it goes it won't damage anything else. What Fume has said is right though, if you do decide to change it, make sure you get all of the old gasket out, and I would run some very very fine, like grade 1000 emery cloth over the mating surfaces after cleaning them off afterwards.

awww i greased mine with copper grease :( :( :(

main thing i found was to make sure the prop is in the right place, knock it back as far as it goes dont force it any further, if its not on far enough u will be going up a hill at say 65mph and over it then hearing a clang clang clank noise...not very fun, but fixable. if u hear the noise, or no power goes to rear press clutch imidiatly and stop as soon as poss, to prevent damage/further damage.

all ways fun having engines out :D

Right, good to hear part of this, i had sorted copper grease out for the prop for its reattachment, but the one thing i don't have is a torque wrench. To get the prop off i used a standard allen key after moving the car to get the prop in the right position to unbolt it. what ever happens the block needs to be in by the end of tomorrow as money is running out and the hoist needs to go back to the hire company. It seems to have gone good so far but this is all new ground to me and i can't afford to make a mistake. I felt the force needed to undo the clamp on the prop and hoped within reason i could do it back up be safe, but maybe i'm p£%%ing in the wind thinking that. What ever happens things are getting tight and need to be done.

Oh by the way, my local parts company did me a deal and i have both the cam belt and a new water pump which i can only see as good.

Cheers

That would be good if you could pop over. I'm going to give things a clean tomorrow and reconect the pipes. But we've kinda run out of cash and i still need to get oil and cooling fluids yet. but later in the week would be great.

Cheers
