Clunking noise?

Post by griffo20022 » 24 Oct 2007 10:12 am

Hey guys, well since i've had the car i've always noticed that when the car is in neutral with the clutch out the car makes a weird sort of clunking noise, when the clutch is held in though it goes away. My initial thought is maybe the thrust bearing on the clutch? The guy I bought the car from said the clutch had been changed not too long ago but I dunno if thats just the plate or the thrust bearing aswell.

Just wondering if it cold possible be anything else before going out and buying a new clutch kit. There isn't a bearing on the actual bellhousing for the prop or anything which it could be that is there??

Also where have people found the cheapest clutch kits should I need to get one? Can you get your hands on them Dai? It's something i'd like to eliminate before going to the pod the end of the month.

There is bearing in the back of the bell housing but I've never personaly had problem with this. The prop could be out of balance making the clunking noise - I have seen that.

If the clutch is suspect I would change it if the noise is bad

griffo mine does the same since i replaced the clutch, as Dai said the bearing on the end of clutch housing it needs greasing i think, also its a little intermitent? and goes when rpm goes over 1k.

thinking about it, it toke a while to come after the clutch change.
Cheers

Yes mate about 1K RPM+ the sound goes away. I think i'm gonna have a look at it over the weekend if yours had the same problem. The guy did say it was a new clutch and to be honest I can't see them changing a clutch and not the release bearing. Plus if it is the bearing in the end of the housing it'll save me some pennies from forking out for a new clutch lol!

Ta' for that dude, i'll give it a try at the weekend :)
