how hard and is it worth it

Post by silvia » 13 Nov 2007 12:04 am

i noticed alot of 300 series are running bike carbs, will thay bolt straight on my standard 1.7 or what do you have to do to make them fit and is there a specific bike e.g R1,GSXR, and what difference will it make to my car?

Thanks
Matt

Why? More power! Quite a noticable difference.

Most people fit them to 340s with 16v conversions, but they'll be a nice upgrade for your standard 1.7, too. You'll need a suitable manifold, and then you'll need to get them jetted to suit your chosen engine.

cheers

The reason for bike carbs is they tend to be cheaper than webbers etc. Where abouts in north wales are you?

Nice to have a local here :D
The price of the mani will depend on what carbs you use. The bigger the bike engine the better I would think but I dont realy claim to know anything about it.

Horsepower is probably a decent guide. Bike engines are typically lower displacement, but rev higher, so the overall CFM the engine will pump is similar.

Most people use Yamaha R1 carbs, but I'm sure any 4 cylinder 1000cc-class bike with four carbs will do the trick. You're looking for barrel diameters (note: venturis will be smaller) somewhere in the order of 40mm.

As above bike carbs are common because they cost so much less than webers etc.

I've got R1 carbs on my 16v lump and they are ace :D absolutely love them! The company "Bogg Bros" did the first conversion (I read the history on the company) the guys like 70 odd years old and his 2 sons did it and fair play to them it's took off well!

I think they can make a GOOD manifold up for any car/carb combination for like £125 I think it is. I havent spoke to them myself but i've heard nothing but good things from people who have, so it's defo worth a shot! Especially when you consider the fact a set of R1 carbs can be picked up for as little as £50! Then the manifold for like £125+ that wouldnt buy you a pair of webers lol!
