Who here has an alarm installed; I would like to know what type; the Mounting area and whether they are any good.

yes was an option my 340 has one but no idea how the thing is activated theres no sign of a switch anywhere and due to it deciding to work in traffic i've removed the fuses that power the thing theres an on-of switch on the unit under the bonnet but even turning it off didnt silence it
it uses a seperate horn unit to the main one bolted beside what i believe is the controller volvo part# 1128810

car thieves are known to read forums as well as us honest folk.

please do not be too specific on makes and models of alarms fitted to your cars and especially there location

Well said, I wouldn't ever consider telling anyone where my saabs alarm is, though I doubt they'd get through the armoured casing before I came out of the house.

my old neighbours had the most fantastic alarm. Its type is called: BIG BARKING DOG!

It's real easy to install: Put it on the rear seat....and that's about it.

I knew a guy who lived in Camberwell who had a mercedes pagoda coupe - about 20k worth of classic car in one of the roughest areas of South London. He had a first class immobiliser fitted, but always left the car unlocked. It didn't have a stereo, and he never left anything in it. Many a time he'd find it with the door half closed, having obviously had people in it rootling around, but he never suffered any damage.

Interesting strategy which seemed to work for him. I had cars broken into 3 times in Camberwell, which always cost me at least £100 a time.

Yeah, I've heard that some people with soft tops leave them unlocked, as it'd be so easy for someone with a knife to cut open the roof, they'd rather leave it unlocked.

And Chris, you're right, it's been about 3 months now I'm certainly looking forward to getting home for Christmas and doing some driving

...I work in Camberwell & Brixton and often leave my car unlocked. It also has never been stolen or tampered with. May have something to do with the worm colony in the boot? Not an anti-theft device I'd recommend, or expect to see in Halfords any time soon.

It is odd, but in high theft areas sometimes people are so suspicious of something high value left obviously waiting to be taken, that they leave well alone - sometimes even crossing the street to avoid what may be some kind of trap. An M-B pagoda left unlocked may well be avoided by scumbags, but I'd hazard that a 300 wouldn't?
