I know where you can get an Aston Martin twin cam straight six bored out to 5 litres (from 4), fitted with high lift cams, electronic ign, other sundry tricks and triple Webers. 483bhp.

The trouble is it costs £20k.............

the rotory is something i've been looking at for a while, in the volvo and for shits and giggles in the back of my 73 beetle.

love the noise from these lumps and also very small and compact. probably be able to fit a triple rotor lump in the cavenous 300 engine bay!

Last time I was at Croft for the rallycross there was a lightning fast RX7 which sounded awesome. Very compact engines, saw one in a chevette so a 340 should be easy.

Interesting thread. I have thought about this too, but it's just a way of keep it with the renault or volvo lump, if you don't want to make it too hard for yourself.

Imagine what a Williams engine with some throttle bodies will do, or even turbocharged.

Or the redblock with a penta crankshaft and a 16v head, or even turbocharged.

Car (must be old and unsuspecting) - £300.
Bodywork to make it mint - £2,000.
Suspension mods - £1,500.
Gearbox and back axle inc conversion work - £3,000.
Engine - £20,000.
Sundry expenses £3200.

For £30k (less than a Skyline, Monaro, M3/5, AMG, TVR etc etc) you'd have a mint 480bhp sleeper that handles.

Hmm, now where's that spare £30k gone........

Hmm, when you put it that way, it doesn't sound so mad :D

But by the time you modify the engine, entire drive line and suspension, it would seem easier to build a kit car chassis with the right wheelbase and track width, and then fit 300 panels to it.

I guess that unless you based it on a transaxle setup it'd loose the 300 charm.

Mick, you're forgetting the Nissan 2.0 turbo diesel in my 360. When I take the engine out of it, it should be interesting to see exactly what was done. It's a shame I never got it running, never really had much time, but Andy and myself tried one afternoon briefly, it was spitting about on easy start, as the glowplugs didn't appear to be working. I can't remember what the trick was someone suggested to me now.

I think a Volvo engine belongs in the 360, ala the B30 or the T5 engine, so much fun. We don't have to get much power to get into the Elise whupping 250bhp per tonne spec.

I'd love a tasty v6 to go in there. The things I would most be worried about in a conversion is gearbox and diff, the rest flows pretty easy.

I think you could get decent brakes and coilovers for 500 pounds tops, 800 if you want Bilsteins.
