interchangeable parts ??

Post by ips volvo » 24 Jan 2008 08:53 pm

Hope this does not cause offence !

I brought the red 1.7 in Aberdeenshire which is a really good buy . I have been running a 1.4 for about 4 years but the MOT has now run out. Does not require a lot but cosmetically needs attention and i would not get anything for it.
I was wondering about taking parts off it and letting the scrappy give me some cash for the rest ....I know this might be heresy here but i simply dont need 2 cars and i have no space.

What parts are interchangeable .......I am thinking of alternator/starter/shocks and anything that i might need to change on the new red one ---they are both F Reg

Propshaft, gearbox (the 1.4 will have a 3.82 final drive though, but possibly worth hanging onto) drive shafts, suspension, as Lee says, the starter and (I think) alternator are different, but brakes, hubs, etc the same as well as all the trim, speedo cable, front engine mounts, heater box, radiator (if it's a later 1.4, post 86 I think) etc. Clutch and throttle cable are different.

Don't chuck the hoses whatever you do, 1.4 ones as well as 1.7 ones are a pain to get hold of, I'd imagine you'd get someone to bite your arm off for them...

If you have enough space, it's worth hanging on to almost everything on the car. I'd be interested in the gearbox and diff as a spare, and If I was coming up to collect stuff, I'd be willing to bring lots of parts down for other people on here. Oh and I could do with a passenger door, is yours a 3dr?

Save bits

Post by workshopmanualman » 25 Jan 2008 08:16 am

Agree with the above post - save anything that you can remove easily. I scrapped my 340 recently, a week before picking my newer one up. I hardly took anything, yet now regret it. Silly things like door catches, the front grille, indicator lenses - you try getting them when you need them..... I'd even remove side windows now!

Go through it and take everything. The scrappy will not care - they just want the body and engine.
I blame the Volvo 66 estate I had......

When I was a lad scrapping 240's we took every last nut and bolt off teh shell. The only thing weighed in would have been the sheel then a years went by we started taking off less as we had loads of some bits spare.

The hoards of bits have proven very usfull as the early model 240 stuff is now very rare.

Keep anything that can be unbolted and is not broken

Thanks a lot !

The red one is brilliant after a long drive through the Caringorms and motorway driving it pulls well and feels a lot better than the 1.4. I will see George Mitchell up the road and ask him about dismantling stuff. He is the keenest man i have met re the 300 cars --its a pity he refuses to enter the computer age .! I wouldn't ask him about storage as his wife doesn't have the 300 disease .......

Don't forget to keep bits of the interior as well, things like the plastic door pull surrounds are always breaking, door handles are known to snap as they get older, if your old seats are good hang on to them too, they're easy to change over.

Hmm, what else hasn't been mentioned. The heater valve / warm water shut off, heater resistor (in the heater box) the front & rear lights, and all the door / boot / bonnet seals, they're easy enough to remove and don't take up too much space in the cellar / loft.

IPS, when you see George, if you're not already, join the FOTV3... great magazine, and George is doing a great effort trying to help contacting Volvo about the parts situation. When I finally get my engine running, I'll have a magazine article for him!
