Normally take's a read off of the coil if I remember correctly sm14 negative side of coil.
Ya'll need a feed off ignition, chassis earth and dash light feed.

If that's wrong sure someone will correct me

nope, your spot on. Any car I've wired a tachometer into uses the coil -ve wire (grey wire coming out of the renix on a 300 I think?)

The grey renix wire is a dedicated tacho feed, it's not just the -ve side of the coil. Depending what year your car is mate, that wire might already be in the multiplugs that the dash cluster plugs into.

pink wire from memory back of the biggest multi plug if your going to replace the clock it should plug in to its place and work from the off.

aftermarket is another matter
my dash comes apart this weekend again to wire in all the other guages if i make my panel up for them:)

It should already be wired in on that age. Was the tacho working on the car the cluster came from?

It should be plug-and-play, connect the new console and it should all just work peachy without having to worry about which wire goes where
