Yet Another problem

Post by cheshire190e » 12 May 2008 11:52 pm

Hi everyone, my car has another problem. Im assuming its the alternator but thought i may as well let you know.

My car would not start so i bought a new battery today, got new battery leads and earth coz the old ones were going rusty, cleaned all the connections off so it was nice.

Went on an hour drive and just returned home and my car will not start, its drained the brand new battery.

I think this must be the alternator, i know i put the leads on the right way round, is there anything except the alternator i should check out?

Cheers

hi there

I have a friend near me in Prestwich who runs a starter motor/alternator diagnosis and rebuild centre. If you want, we could get your alternator tested there. If you have flattened the battery that fast (sounds similar to when I leant my friend a battery to get their car off a country lane to a house nearby when their alternator belt snaped) then your alternator may not be charging.

If you read the battery voltage it should be 12V with the ignition off, 13V at just above idle and max out at 14V when the engine is revved. That would be simple test to see if the alternator is alive.

good luck and keep in touch

alternator is the problem then

as that light is suposed to go of when the car starts because the alternator has kicked in charge wise. if it doesnt kick in the light stays solid and basicaly means its dead.
