dB drag in my 340 volvo

Post by paul » 28 May 2008 10:03 pm

i am using my 340 volvo for dB drag contests. i love how it sounds.
i am starting a small company, installing sound sistems in cars, so for a couple of exibitions, i hook't up a 18" subwoofer and a few kW of power and started the long and interested road of dB drag.

in the first competition i managed to get 141,8 dB in it with one batery and 1800 W of power. i got the third place in that contest.

the second contest was 1 week ago, and after a few arangements ( i added a extra deep cicle battery in, and some interiour work, the final score was 144,4 dB. i will come with some pictures soon.

we (me and the friend i work with), hope that on the 15 th of june, there is a new competition 100 miles from where i live, we'll be able to beat the 145 dB mark.

we hope for the best. has anybody else done something similar?

we mannaged to pull 144.4 with 2400 W at 36 hz with a port that was tunned at 31 hz. So the main idee was to make it very loud and still very low in frequency. the doors were opening a couple of mm at the top. Almost everyone at the contest was aiming to high frequnecy's, over 45 hz, but we had a lot of base on music. and the score for the music test was 142.1 on music, having the drivers door opened. i have some pictures i will upload, but here is a small movie i found of my car on youtube. :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgwguemZJB8

RE XXX 18?

Looks alright i must say. so glad i expected foreign( No offence) i 144.4DB is average in the uk now for most cars on a single 12 of a KW.

Loudest Db drag car is a Nova burping 170DB.

now what Amplifier are you using? as 2.4KW sounds a tad fishy

I've been wanting to know this for a while, what are the parameters and tests in which the "dB" rating is recorded and judged?

yes the speaker is a RE audio 18 XXX, 2005 model. We used a Viper 2.5 kW, but it is a litle bit to much power for the XXX at this frequencies. Here, the dB contest are just at the begining. and 144.4 is pretty good, taking in consideration that the car is not SPL, but a daily use. We are constantly trying to make the design better and we hope to go over 150 in the next months. The woofer has 2 ports that we play around with. in the picture there is no port on it. We have a "music" port that is tunned at 31 hz, and a SPL port that is tunned at 45 hz. The thing is that all around Romania there are just about 5-6 Term Labs, so tunning the car having a term lab would be perfect, but we hope to get there.
