Dan, before you bin the originals, bear in mind that Volvo speakers (even used ones) have been going for quite a bit on Ebay lately. The same goes for 80's Volvo stereos.

They have?! I found at least 4 pairs of fronts, and one or two set of rears when I moved! Hmmm... I see a plan forming...trabitom99 wrote:Dan, before you bin the originals, bear in mind that Volvo speakers (even used ones) have been going for quite a bit on Ebay lately. OK, these were BNIB, but I've seen used ones go for lots too. You'd have to accept foreign bidders though.

Aussie 360GLT wrote:also if u get the right sort of speaker spacers u can fit 6"-6.5" speakers in the front too lol
Can anyone in-the-know tell me what sort of spacers please? Hubby and I are doing up an '85 360GLT hatch for our daughter to learn to drive in, I'm sure she's going to want bigger/better speakers in the front.
Also, what size speakers fit above the parcel shelf? How are they screwed in? I've looked in the how-to section and seen where the speakers go, but not sure on the fitting.
Any help greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Thanks for the speedy reply, any recommendations for speaker brand, wattage etc?hatch360 wrote:Why bother with 6.5 speakers when good 4" would provide descent quality and some cheap 6x9 at the back make up for what is lost.
I think the size is 4x6 above the parcel shelf but its probably easier to install 6x9s on the parcel shelf.
because 6.5" speaker have a bigger cone area that a 4" speaker.hatch360 wrote:Why bother with 6.5 speakers when good 4" would provide descent quality and some cheap 6x9 at the back make up for what is lost.

6x9s if your goign full blown audio dont get them as they will ruin the sound system.
right decent sound reproduction requires as such decent speakers. now the MORE cone area you have (6.5 is bigger than a 5 inch 4 inch etc) this allows better reproduction.
if your running a subwoofer in the rear of the vehicle dont run 6x9s. they will break with in days
end of the day go with what you want. 6.5's in the volvo will require work upfront.

I understand, that 6.5 is larger cone area and will require spacers to fit in behind the exsisting front door speakers....what sort of spacers do I look for?
In the rear above the parcel shelf, the volvo standard one is 4 x 6 ? Should I stay with that size? (there is currently no rear speakers on the vehicle at all, that's why I'm asking all of these dumb questions)
you can make speaker pods yourself. or pay to have it done by a pro.
you'd need some wood to make your own baffles, fibre glass etc.
most show cars only have front speakers as when your watching something live they are in front of you not behind you. this is why they only have front speakers.
end of the day though consult with yoru daugther what shes wants sound wise.

get whats cheapest, a set of jbl 6x9's (GTO936e? I think) in the parcel shelf with some cheap 4" up front will be more than enough to keep a non car audiophile happy and provide lots of volume even when powered from a cheap headunit.
Kaos, the stuff you are talking about is extra work for someone who just wants a decent stereo. Though of course you are right the basic rough optimum setup in my opinion is 6.5" component speakers up front and a carefully selected and tuned subwoofer and enclosure all powered from a nice high quality amplifier.
