Rattling sound on tick over

Post by cheshire190e » 05 Sep 2008 12:11 pm

Hi everyone,

my car makes a rattling/clanking sound when my car is ticking over in neutral but then stops when i put my foot on the clutch.

is this the clutch release bearing gone or something else?

cheers

check for play/movement in the clamps that connect the rubber part of the driveshaft to the teethed bits of the clutch shaft/gearbox shaft.

sometimes the hex bolts come loose...

also, you might want to check for play between the clutch plate and the clutch shaft.

Another source of sound (usually not rattling/clunking) can be the clutch shaft bearing 'staartstuklager'

these usually become noisy very quick after installation, but last quite long when you just let them be noisy.

I realise this is probably teaching you to suck eggs but...

in neutral, the propshaft is constantly spinning. when you pop the clucth, this is no longer the case.

perhaps you are hearing the noise of your 'shaft spinning (oo err). Mine does this too.

whats it like under load? i.e in gear, driving along?

If you start to hear a chunking when changing gear then your props about to go, mine chunked when changing gear then suddenly went, so now as soon as i hear chunking a get under and give her a tighten, at least until i get the new bits for her.

do you mean your prop fell off? like at one end(normally the rear end)

if thats the case you havent got it on right it needs to be tapped down further, an tightened well.

i also have that clunking sound at idle that goes with the clutch being depressed. i know my engine moves quite alot a idle/its rough, so that could be a part of it, the engine might not be alighed right, but i think its most likly the bearing where the prop spline is (engine end)/ if that spline is slightly bent.

No the splines rounded of and i was left stuck in the road with a car which screamed when i tried to move away, the clunk wasn't very loud it was the prop moving ever so slightly against the clutch shaft splines. that was my first prop im on number 2 which will be replaced soon as it too has started to go a little.
