Coupling sleeve and long time no see

Post by Hakan2 » 10 Dec 2008 08:47 pm

Hello Gentlemen,

Nearly 2 years ago, I came here to seek advice from you :

I was puzzled about vibrations in the transmission.
That could be the answer :

It is apparently a well known "bug".... and I should like to thank the Dutch author of this web page http://www.xs4all.nl/~chdrost/models/360/360tube.html
It has been a great help for the toubleshooting.
Take a close look at the splines on the gear box side, and you'll see that they are worn just as well.

Not surprinsingly, this coupling sleeve is not available anymore from Volvo France ....
Car 's mileage is a mere 100 000 miles or so, with stock B19A (carb) engine.
The poor little thing as it is now :

hi there

Sorry to hear about your 360.

I'm not so clued up on the 360s but...and I say this with caution, that joint doesnt look so impossible to make a new one. Given the wear on the gearbox side you might want to fit a sleeve over that or remake the splines. A replacement link would need to fit the new sleeve or new made splines on the box.

maybe?

I'm sure someone more familar with the 360 will be along soon....someone might even have a spare link for you!

good luck and welcome to v3M!

Shimon
Enjoy your 300s

I've heard about this link piece being weak, but this is the first time I've seen a pic of a broken one. I've never had a 360 driveline apart, but that link does look like a poor design.

Hi John, all,

I know at least of someone else, here in France, who faced the same problem safe that the coupling sleeve did not break like mine, but the splines ended up completly worn out, which at the end the day makes no difference :? .
I am not impressed by the design of this part, either.
Now, I wonder whether one of the Two BTR scew fastening the sleeve on the gearbox side did not unscrew over time, leading to some excess play, that wore off the splines and finally the lead it to break.

Unproper tightening torque when factory assembled ?

I would be interested if someone here care checking the torque applied on these two BTR screw ....
