Funny noise.

Post by volvosneverdie » 18 May 2009 12:45 am

Noted today:

When I press the loud pedal a little bit, there comes a noise akin to a startled mouse farting inside a closed and sealed biscuit tin.
Press the pedal further and it goes away.
A long rolling fart mind you. Not a tommy-squeeker.
Sounds to me to be coming from some underneath pipes near the rear of the vehicle.
I've looked up the main pipe as best i can, and report seeing no mouse up there.
But it is very dark.

Could it be something other than a mouse?
A mouse is unlikely, I know. But I'm more familiar with the sounds that mice make than I am with cars, so I was hoping it might be at least partially mouse related.

I have laid traps just in case.

Any help greatly appreciated as always.

Sadly i've never heard a Mouse fart in a biscuit tin so i'm of no help to you.

However if it was a Gerbil in a shoe box, i'm your man

I felt Lilt sounded the most amusing, but in reality it could be any empty can.
It could also be the worlds tinyest one note caribean steel band, but this too seems unlikely.

Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?

Vacuum leak whines, something loose rattles, any help?

Clutch down, does it go away?

Open fuel cap and test again?

Really random guesses, I don't know what pipes you mean, if them are in a trunk, then they must be fuel lines of some sort and could be then blocked fuel tank ventilation, but opening fuel filler cap should make noise go away then. There should not be vacuum lines at rear of car, imo. No sure about those 1.4's really.

Yeah miniture caribian steel bans are a rare phenominon in these parts of the world so i would say you can safely rule those out.

Where abouts is it coming from, by pipes you mean exhaust right? If thats the case surely it's just got a small blow somewhere?

Most probably a resonance in the exhaust at certain revs. Try adjusting some of the positions of the joints. Oh, and plenty of rat bait :P

If it rattles, then indeed exhaust is one possibility, mine did touch lightly to rear axle and that made noise.

My license plate did rattle also at one point, stuffed something between it and car, problem solved

Sounds like the back box ish to me. But a blow wouldn't fade at higher revs would it?

Don't THINK its a rattle (sounds very 'airy' )
But you might be right.

I'll get the woman to press the pedal for me tomorow so I can get back there for an investigate.

Clutch didn't alter sound. Tried that first.

If it's only at a certain accelerator point, it could be due to the flow of exhaust gas resonating the exhaust against your car because it is at the natural frequency for the exhaust to vibrate. First thing I'd do is make sure your exhaust bolts are all nice and tight and check for metal-on-metal action.
