Common Renix problem?

Post by Fuse » 20 May 2009 12:08 pm

Is there any common fault to be diagnosed in Renix when it sometimes (very rarely though) doesn't give spark.

When this happens it has always been damp weather. It had been raning all night and when I started the car at this morning it started fine. I drove to my parents house and when I tried to start the car again at there, Renix didn't give any spark. I was there only five or ten minutes so it's quite weird. I waited like 5min and knocked the renix unit a bit and checked the wires (which were all ok) and the car started fine and has worked fine now. It has done this two times before and both times it had been raining a lot and it always starts after awhile though but it's weird problem still..

And it was definately a Renix problem because it didn't even try to fire and the tacho meter needle didn't move a bit, when it normally jumps a bit if there's a bad spark or fueling problems but when it doesn't move at all, the renix doesn't do anything. It's like the power for Renix was out.

It's not a problem which occurs too often, it was two years ago when this happened last time but it's quite annoying still. :D So should I look for another Renix unit or could this some earthing problem or similiar? I'm going to check all the earthings and wiring anyway though.

All this sounds very interesting and very familiar. Had a few problems over winter on damp mornings, it wasn't the dizzy cap, it wasn't the leads, it wasn't the spark plugs.

Keep the comments coming ;-)

the 3 plugs at the top of the renix have been equipped with waterproof connectors, it could be that the coil pack connectors are a bit corroded..

also the voltage could play a part, a renix is setup to completely switch itself off is voltage is below 9,5V it will also switch itself off if the ground isn't "good".

Check for perished insulation. Sounds like bad or shorting connections.

American Jeep Cherokee had also Renix and those had 300rpm limit, below of that no spark. Quite annoying in very cold weather.
