Looking for info on 360/B200 water pumps

Post by malloy1 » 25 May 2009 05:41 pm

Hello-

Edit after the first post info: I'm looking for information on the B200 water pumps (Volvo Part #3344252), replace the B230 to B200 in the discussion and forget about the discussion of the heater pipe.

I'm in the US, and the 360s never made it over here.

This is kinda a non-360 related question. I'm working on installing a B230F engine into a 1960 Volvo P210.

Image

I'm trying to figure out how to make the cooling system work. The B230F engine is out of a 1990 240, and the water pump is too long for a mechanical fan (gets about 1/2" [13mm] from the radiator). I thought about using an electric fan in front of the radiator, or cutting off the front of the water pump and using an electric water pump and electric fan mounted behind the radiator.

Image

Some have suggested using a water pump from a 360 (I think the Volvo part number is 3344253 or 3344252 - water pump that will fit B230). Since the 360 wasn't imported to the US, I have found very little information on the differences of the water pumps/cooling system.

The information I have found seems to be that the 360/B230 water pumps are about 20mm (3/4") shorter than the 240/B230 water pumps (the 360 water pump would give about 35mm (1-5/16") of room from the front of the water pump to the radiator -> which is about the stock distance of the B16/B18 water pump to radiator):

Image

I can't find a picture of the pulley used in a 360. I figure it is a single groove pulley? Anybody have a picture?

Does the 360/B230s have a mechanical fan or do they use an electric fan? If it's a mechanical fan, does it have a fan clutch like the B230s or is it just a rigid fan like the B16/B18 had?

It seems that the heater pipe from the water pump is also different -> The 360 is mounted on the top and the 240 is mountedon the bottom of the water pump.

Is there anything different about the water pump setup?

Big question (edited): Does anybody have/can get a setup that are willing to ship to the US? ->New water pump (good quaility) and an used pulley. Or just a used pulley?

Appreciate it!

Paul

BTW-Please educate me if I'm wrong.

Hello, welcome to the forum!

Bear in mind that 3344253 is the part for the B19 360 engine and 3344252 for the later B200 engine, they may be similar in length but the bolt spacing is different. I have a pic here:

The B19 versions are on the left, the B200s on the right. No idea which fits a B230 though!

The 360 has an electric fan ...

The 240 B200 and B230s use the same water pump. Of course the US didn't get the B200 either, so I guess my info needs to be about the B200 water pumps. That said, the heater pipes are mounted the same between the two, so I'm not looking for that part. Thanks for the pictures of the different water pumps. Are those different manufacturers of water pumps? Any comments on different aftermarket manufacturers (GMB, QH, Hepu, etc.) -> which ones to stay away from?

Here's a picture of the B230 water pump that had the impeller removed, nose shortened and the hole plugged.

Big problem with using an electric water pump is how the coolant flows through the system. I would have to plug the two smaller holes (those are suction side ports) in the water pump housing and reroute the heater core hose. A lot more work than I originally thought.

Thanks-

Paul

Yes, they're different. The bottom ones are both from Volvo, the top ones are aftermarket ones (EDIT: top right is from "unipart", top left I've no idea!). I'm afraid I can't say from personal experience if there are any makes to steer clear of, Volvo pumps would be the best of course ;-) but are are NLA. I'm sure the (still available) SKF or QH pumps do a good job too though.

I have worked on this, as the B230 in a Volvo 360 has the same problem with the 240 water pump coming out too far. The fan also hits the radiator.
A B19 water pump (from a 360) is the one to have. You need a pulley with 2 "levels" as in this picture:
Image

The B200 pump does not fit the engine, a B230 pump does not fit the fan properly.

When you get a B19 pump from a 360, be sure to have a Volvo 360 pulley sent with it, as well as the 4-point arm maybe. With a bit of welding, you can make your own, but i think a pulley is needed, as the one from a B230 does not fit B19 waterpump.

As i bought a 3rd party water pump, i don't have the appropriate volvo number, i am sure someone can find that.

I have made some photo's that are probably useful for your project. Check the Dutch Volvo 300 club on the link above.
It's in Dutch, but with the engine codes and http://translate.google.com you should be able to figure out what i mean ;)

The 360 waterpump is indeed a fair bit shorten than the 240 one.

Thanks for the info. Seems finding a water pump pulley for a 360 has run me into a deadend.

Not usually, Tom. 360 has a mechanical fan bolted onto the front of the waterpump via a viscous coupling.

You're right I should have read the post more carefully ;-) I was comparing the one on my 360 to the rigid "always on" system on the 343, but of course that doesn't make the 360s fan "electric" ...
