Tips for renewal of Front wishbone bushes

Post by volvo300 » 02 Dec 2009 01:16 pm

Hi all.

I'm about to change my Front wishbone bushes to some of Dai's.

What are the best way of removing the old ones and installing the poly one?
If someone has pics of the job it would be a big help to me

Thanks in advance.
Regards.
Peter

with these tools (on the left):

and a vice, you should clamp the center bush part in with the top flat against it.

i first held it above the vice and the wishbone bended a little after a nice smack with the hammer, if you're at it you'll see what i mean. i have no experience with renewing these under the car, this was nearly just as easy (only 5 bolts a side)

Hi Anjo.

Thanks for the pic!
Have you got any experience with Dai's poly bushes?
What do you use as lubricant when installing them?
I have read, that poly's is best of with some sort of grease and not washing up liquid??!!

What do you use?

Cheers.

Hello Peter, i have a complete front suspension polybushkit from Dai on my 340Turbo.

the old rubbers are the bitch to remove, the polybushes include a grease but i simply used PH neutral vaseline it's actually quite easy to get them in.

Hi Arjo.

OK! If there is grease with the bushes then I'll just use that!

And yes, I removed the wishbones today... those bushes haven't been out for like 28 years, so they aren't giving up without a fight sm2
Haven't had time to fight them anymore tonight.... But I'll be back

Have a nice weekend.

Cheers.

Hi kaos.

I'll be using the "burn out" method as the last option!
I'll try Arjo's way first.

For the burn out method, are you using a blow tourch?

Cheers.

hmm, i got mines out in like 2 solid blows with the hammer

the trickyest part is clamping in the wishbone in the vice so that the wishbone doesn't bend from hammer impact force, with a hammering tool placed in/onto the steel center of the bush; a few solid smacks should let the entire bush plop out intact..

torch will take way longer, but i find playing with flames rather amusing from time to time :D

Hi again Arjo.

Here's how it went tonight.

I used:
- a vice
- one short bolt
- one large bolt with a nut
- a hammer
- 2 bearing races from a rear bearing

With this setup I got the 2 bushes out without breaking them :)

.... and yes, I'm also drawn by fire 8)

Cheers.
