360 GLS Project
360 GLS Project
Hi, im new here.
I have a 1984 360 2.0GLS with 40k on the clock, full volvo service history and im the 2nd owner (has been garaged for most of its life so in great shape).
Im looking to turn it into a drift wagon, so im thinking:
lowering front and rear.
k&n replacement filter (rc9000)
Some kind of exhaust, no idea what...
Strip interior and loose some weight..
Im looking for some setup advice and ideas for parts and where to go as im very new to volvos..
Any easy mods for some more ponies etc..
Thanks in advance.
Sam

Re: 360 GLS Project
Hate to say it dude but that's a bit of a shame turning a low mileage car into a drift wagon... especially when there are so many slightly scruffy examples out there willing to take some abuse
For more power on the GLS the best thing to do is fit a 2.3 carb'd engine, will get you about 130-140bhp and a lot of torque

Re: 360 GLS Project
Well its my daily car as well, but i just want to have some fun in it.. Plus for the money i picked it up for there wasnt anything else around..
Im not going to ruin it, and will be keeping all parts to reassemble if i dont like it. But a good solid car is the best basis for any project i reckons..
Dont really want to go down the engine swap line, so maybe i will stick with the current setup. Seems pretty nippy as is, and with less weight should be better.
Any one got any ideas about exhausts, the standard system is so quiet..

Re: 360 GLS Project
The earlier GLS engine (B19 on strom) is one of the best to drive, and will shift it you ask it too. If you are a carb ninja, then a cam swap might be possible. If you havn't tuned carbs before, then expect about 6months of reading books first.
Sounds like it's working fine to me then... that'll save some pennies towards something usefullkwacker wrote:Any one got any ideas about exhausts, the standard system is so quiet..

Re: 360 GLS Project
You've the problem that it's not a popular car for modding (well, wasn't) so off the shelf tuning parts arn't there. Getting a few more horses is perfectly possible, the block you have has been tuned up to 4 figures, but you have to do everything yourself. You can't just remap it.
I have a thing about exhausts, the racing I do is stupidly restrictive on them anyway, but I don't see the point of having a moderately slow car drawing attention to itself. The other way is always going to be better
If you want more power, look into getting a K or even better an H cam (there is one for sale at the mo) but be prepared to work out the needles and jettings for your carb, or most likely a complete new carb setup. A pair of SU's set up on that engine would be awesome.
We've seen way too many "drift projects" on here lately that consist of nothing more than getting the car, screwing it over, then trying to sell the broken car for 2/3/4 times what the person paid for it. Scepticism seems to occur with drift newbies for that reason. We certainly arn't anti motorsport or drift, some of the forums best cars are just that. Plus I'm in a bad mood

Re: 360 GLS Project
Its is probably the one you are thinking of, is silver and does live in bristol..
I really cant make my mind up yet as to what to do to it, or whether to just keep it as it is..
Thanks for all the information people, rest assured i am not in the mind to ruin it at all.
Anything that is removed will be kept in factory condition, the diff is staying unwelded.. It drifts well as it is..
I have no issue playing with it, but i reckon im going to refrain from altering the engine, bar maybe a K&n and a little carb fettle. i need it to be reliable. An ive only just got it to produce decent MPG figures..

Good luck with it chap, I was going to buy it as a daily driver as it was in rather nice condition - lots of mileage left in it

Re: 360 GLS Project
Top tip: Don't strip the interior. It'll make it super noisy, you'll lose almost no weight at all, and people will think you're a retard. For serious.
If you want power, stick it on carbs, but budget for tuning...but the most go-faster bang for the buck will probably come from making it corner better.
cheers
James

Stickers improve horsepower greatly for a reasonably small outlay.
