id say its easier with a hammer than a pole (tried both) the pole just squishes into the tyre lol

you cant really go wrong just dont use too big a hammer or it will just a normal sized hammer and dont go smacking the crap out of it
just moderate force taps all the way round and you will see the lipp starting to bend round took me under an hour to do both arches

id advise you to cut it every inch or so it will fold away without bending the external part/ chip paint

you shouldnt need to cut it not for just rolling them even if the get flared out they dont need cut

i suppose thats the case if you are rolling them with a pipe+wheel combo, just with the hammer me and my friend used we found it much easier to just cut every inch or so and tuck it away with pliers then a bit of hammer action
EDIT: also if you are going to do it, try to warm up the paint to allow it to flex and prevent cracks + chips
