RE: Volvo 360 GLT in New Zealand

Post by Park660 » 12 Mar 2010 01:42 am

Hi,
I am thinking about buying an 86 360GLT which are a bit rare over here, just after some advice on what to check when looking at the car and pro's and cons of the 360 GLT. I am currently driving an 85 mk2 golf gti 8 valve but have got a bit sick of it.

Also does the 360 have bosch Kjetronic similar to the golf?

Any comments advise would be much appreciated as these are not a common animal over here in NZ.

Cheers

I would say rust, as thats the only bad thing, but being from upside down land I don't think your cars rust (the ones we see certainly don't, epically jealous!)

360's run LE jet, which whilst a bit lame is nothing like as bad as K jet (not fuel dizzy, it's electronic but analog). Power wise it's a tiny amount slower than the 8V, but pretty much on par with it. Handling wise it'll turn in better but won't be as flat so a nadgers slower but huge amounts more fun I've always found. Fwiw the mk2 Golf is the only fwd thing I've ever actually enjoyed driving and had a desire to own ;)

Yeah there's not a lot to look out for other than rust, but you're much luckier over there - the ones I see there are pretty much rust free!

I think you'd be surprised about K jet though Chris... the 240 GLT's I've been in have all ran nicer and more responsive than any 360 with LE-Jet I've been in/driven.

Also, with the various battles I've had with Mk2 8v Golf GTi's in Mk3 GLT's it has been a completely dead heat every time, much to their surprise!

I've driven a couple of mk2 gti's, mainly 16v though. K jet works well, a snadgers thirsty, just something about a fuel dizzy scares me!

A sunny climate is a host to lots of other problems: cracked dashboards and such.

Agreed about the sun. 24 yrs under the Aussie sunlight has totally ruined the paint on my 360. Mind you, I think NZ is a bit cooler.

Along with the rest of the advice, make sure you've got somewhere decent to get parts from. They don't go wrong very often at all, but when they do it's usually summat 'orrible :)
