Clicking Noise
Clicking Noise
So now I've got the carb and ignition sorted and the car is going well except ... I have a sort of 'death-watch beetle' ckicking sound from under the floor front as the car accelerates or deccelerates even by small amounts. I have had the steering and front suspension checked but find no obvious faults so I feel it is safe to drive. The car feels ok driving but the noise is driving we nuts! Any ideas?

It's a 1.7 redline with manual gears. The noise only happens when the car is traveling, especially over speed bumps and lumpy ground. Also on small changes in speed. I cannot get it to do it while stationary. I am thinking it is when the body is flexing. The noise is coming from under the left of the front passenger footwell. I had some welding done on the sills for the MOT and I am seriously considering that it might be that. I will be taking it back to the garage this week to check that out. The front suspension unit is fine and rust free mounts. Apart from the small bits on the sills the bodywork is very good. Unfortunately my wife refuses to let me run the car over her while she listens for the noise.

This noise, is it a deep sounding tapping/knocking noise? I have a noise that occurs over potholes, bumps etc, I can only really hear it at low speeds, especially down my driveway! It has got worse over the last few months. I have been told it is most likely to be the anti roll bars. Mine is currently heard more on the right hand side and would sound to be coming from the same sort of area as your noise. I've yet to properly check out the problem and see if it is the anti roll bars and what can be done other than replacement.

Hi Pete
I think I'm getting nearer. I took it around to the local body repair shop and took the guy for a short ride. After investigating all the underside bits such as steering, bushes etc he looked at the door (which is in very good condition. As he waggled the door open and shut checking the hinges I heard that noise. However, it wasn't the hinges. Next week, he's going to take off the 'furniture' and investigate within. The noise I heard seems to be the 'folding arm lever bit' that prevents the door swing right back. He suspects it may be that flexing and the noise transmitting to the door pillar. Watch this space!

Ah! You have the other noise that I have and that I'd forgotten about! Yes, the door check/stays do often when closed create a rattle, my o/s also has the problem. I believe a good dab of grease settles it, though I've never got round to doing it. Normally once moving I turn the stereo up which drowns any squeaks and rattles! I know how annoying that rattle can be. I currently have a rattly door trim on the passenger side which either needs the screws tightening or some packing inside! On idle it drives me mad.

Hmm... I've got a similar rattle in the front passenger door, sounds a bit like a relay clicking. Tends to get set off when crawling in traffic and finding pothole/speedbump or something.
I always presumed it had something to do wtih the small collection of screws in the glovebox, never looked any closer....

I must admit I did think my 960 had a creaking noise inside it somewhere and I was ready to tear out the interior in a mad attempt to find the source of this annoying noise.
It was then pointed out by my darling wife that it was just my knees creaking with old age..............
