Totally sympathise with you... my friend at work who's 20 is trying to insure a first car, the only thing that they'd remotely touch him on for around the £1000 mark was a 1.0 K11 Micra. 340's were about £2000 for him too.

Try (AND REALLY DO HAVE A GO!!!)

Footman James Classic Insurance.

Theyre not on go-get-shafted.com

Put a small mileage down 3,000 is a good place to start. (you can add more miles when you use them up, footman is nice like that... or clock it

You have to have access to a garage for overnight parking or if it is nicked you don't get it back... I have no garage.

I was quoted £1,300 at gocompare, £148 at footman.

They cover very young drivers Tom, they are about the only classic ones that do.

If your Volvo isn't old enough, we could always find you a V66 or a DAF

A rural postcode would be of great benefit.

rural postcodes are worse up here then the local towns, my insurance is always about £200 less if I use my sisters post code about 12 miles away, when i was 19 got insured for £450 through admiral that was in my own name with my mum + dad as named drivers, third party fire + theft, 2500 miles a year + garaged that was on a 340 1.4 btw and I didnt have any NCB, dont see how insurance is that bad for you my rx8 is only £1100 now im 20 and ive only got 1 years NCB now

Ah, okay, not too rural, but not too inner city.

Going back to the dim and distance past, My insurance loading on being 17 was about 100% on the basic undiscounted premium, with about a 5% reduction per year so 95% at 18, 90% loading at 19, etc. Really depends on the insurer. My first car, as 602cc Citroen Dyane 6 (ins grp 1) that cost me £75 cost £330 to insure myself and that after inflation is only about £530 now. The following car cost £310, even though it was 1622cc, but it was an asthmatic Wolseley 16/60 auto with a whopping 1 1/4" SU on it. The benefit of that, was it was only group 2. I have heard of some 18 / 19 year olds with dirt cheap quotes, but it really depends on what you drive.

It's mad you have to do all your insurance shopping before getting a car.

The worst they can do is say no, but they often will flex the rules that the internet software has

Can you get your parents to insure the car in whatever way is cheapest, then take out something like this?

http://www.halfordslearners.co.uk/about ... urance.asp

Then when you pass, get added as a named driver for the rest of the policy before taking out your own policy when the original one expires?
